A boat began going under near Miami’s Rickenbacker Causeway Friday night, leaving 10 people needing a fast ride off the water. A U.S. Coast Guard crew reached the vessel and got everyone aboard to safety before a salvage team hauled the boat away.
According to WSVN 7News, the Coast Guard assisted all 10 people aboard after the vessel started sinking near the causeway. The station reported that a salvage team later towed the boat to Dinner Key Marina. The initial account did not identify the vessel or explain what caused it to take on water.
Dinner Key Marina is a City of Miami-operated facility in Coconut Grove at 3400 Pan American Drive. The City of Miami lists the marina as roughly 2.5 miles southwest of the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge.
Another Virginia Key Rescue This Year
The rescue follows another Coast Guard response near Virginia Key in March, when a Station Miami Beach crew found three people aboard a partially submerged vessel, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. All three were wearing life jackets and were taken to Crandon Park Marina without reported injuries. In that release, the agency reminded boaters that even short trips can become dangerous and urged mariners to check conditions and take a boating safety course.
