No deputies were hurt in the exchange, which unfolded shortly after 5:30 a.m. in the unincorporated northern Coffee County community near the Murfreesboro line.
According to WZTV, the Coffee County Sheriff's Office was conducting the welfare check in the 500 block of Maple Drive when deputies found a person armed with a weapon. The armed individual fired a gun, and a deputy returned fire, striking the person several times, per the station's report. The wounded man was taken to a local hospital, and the station notes the investigation remains ongoing.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has since opened its own inquiry into the shooting, sending special agents to interview witnesses and collect evidence from the scene, as reported by TBI Newsroom. Under standard Tennessee protocol, the TBI acts strictly as an independent fact-finding agency in officer-involved shootings and does not determine whether a deputy's actions were legally justified. That call rests solely with 14th Judicial District Attorney General Craig Northcott, who formally requested the TBI's involvement and will ultimately decide how the case moves forward once agents share their findings with him.
Why the Deputy Hasn't Been Named
TBI policy explicitly bars state agents from publicly identifying officers involved in shootings, leaving that decision to the local agency involved. That means any disclosure of the deputy's identity would have to come from the Coffee County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Chad Partin, who was first elected in 2018 and won a second four-year term in August 2022, according to Thunder Radio. As of Thursday, the sheriff's office had not released the deputy's name.
Northcott, who has served as chief prosecutor for the 14th Judicial District covering Coffee County since taking office in 2014 and winning re-election in 2022, will review the completed TBI file before deciding whether the shooting was legally justified. Second Beech Grove Shooting This Year
Thursday's shooting marks the second time in 2026 that TBI agents have descended on Beech Grove to investigate a deputy-involved shooting. Less than six months earlier, on March 9, agents were called to the 400 block of Resaca Run after Coffee County deputies executing a search warrant fired at a suspect vehicle that allegedly attempted to strike patrol cars, according to WGNS Radio. Statewide, Thursday's incident was the 26th officer-involved shooting the TBI has been asked to investigate in 2026, per the agency's own tracking.
The repeated scrutiny in a single small community comes as the Coffee County Sheriff's Office grapples with its own staffing pressures. Sheriff Partin told county officials in June 2025 that entry-level deputy pay of $19 an hour trailed neighboring police departments in Manchester and Tullahoma, a gap he said was fueling retention problems, Thunder Radio reported at the time. Coffee County's rural stretches are vast: U.S. Census Bureau estimates put the county's 2025 population at 62,419, with more than 28,000 residents living in unincorporated areas like Beech Grove, according to USAFacts.
