Crown Heights Teen Shot in Leg by Bike-Riding Gunman, NYPD Hunts Duo

An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg last Friday afternoon after two strangers approached him near Pacific Street and Schenectady Avenue in the Weeksville section of Crown Heights, according to police. One of the individuals was on a bicycle and the other was on foot when the confrontation turned violent just after 2:20 p.m.

Police say the individual on foot displayed a firearm and then discharged it, striking the teenager in the leg, according to NYPD Crime Stoppers. Following the shooting, the two suspects fled eastbound on Pacific Street to parts unknown, per the agency. Automated technology helped confirm the location of the gunfire: Citizen app radio logs recorded a ShotSpotter acoustic gunshot-detection activation at 67 Schenectady Avenue, between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street, for a report of a male shot in the leg.

The intersection sits in Weeksville, a historically significant pocket of northern Crown Heights that falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 77th Precinct, whose stationhouse at 127 Utica Avenue covers 1.73 square miles across northern Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and Weeksville. Neither suspect has been publicly identified, and it remains unclear whether the teenager was targeted specifically or approached at random.

A Pattern of Daytime Gun Violence Along the Corridor

This is not the first daylight shooting to rattle the area in recent months. Just days earlier, on August 4, NYPD Crime Stoppers sought a suspect in a double leg shooting outside 619 Nostrand Avenue, also within the 77th Precinct, which left two men wounded in the lower extremities.

Back in February, a gunman shot a 30-year-old man in the abdomen during a daylight robbery on Lincoln Place before fleeing northbound on Schenectady Avenue — the same corridor where Friday's shooting unfolded. That earlier case also drew a $3,500 Crime Stoppers reward for information.

Felony Charges and Mandatory Prison Time at Stake

Whoever fired the shot faces serious exposure under New York law. Intentionally shooting a victim with a firearm is classified as felony assault under state Penal Law §120.05 and §120.10, carrying prison terms ranging from up to seven years for second-degree assault to up to 25 years for first-degree assault, according to Saland Law. Carrying an unlicensed, loaded handgun separately constitutes criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a Class C violent felony that carries mandatory prison sentences under state law.

The shooting comes as the 77th Precinct has been actively working to pull illegal firearms off the street. In April, officers from the precinct seized five illegal firearms during a single car stop in Crown Heights as part of targeted gun interdiction efforts. Citywide, NYPD leadership announced this month that officers had removed more than 3,000 illegal firearms from New York City streets in the first eight months of 2026, building on more than 5,100 guns seized in 2025.

The identities and motives behind the two individuals who approached the teenager on Pacific Street remain unknown, and investigators have not said whether the victim knew his attackers. For now, the case adds another entry to a string of daytime shootings that have tested the 77th Precinct's efforts to curb gun violence across northern Crown Heights this year.
