A cyclist is dead after being struck by a driver on Inverrary Boulevard in Lauderhill, according to police. Officers responded to the 4400 block of the roadway on Friday morning to reports of a cyclist being hit, and found a man suffering from multiple injuries. Police performed CPR until fire rescue crews arrived, but the man was later pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center.
The Lauderhill Police Department confirmed the death and said the driver remained at the scene, according to WPLG Local 10. Police said the crash scene showed no initial signs of impairment, though the outlet's report notes that all information remains preliminary and could change as more details become available. The injured man has not been identified.
LPD traffic homicide investigators and crime scene investigators are now handling the case, per the same account. No further details about the driver, the vehicle involved, or the events leading up to the crash have been released.
A Corridor Already Flagged for Bike Safety Upgrades
Inverrary Boulevard has been the site of prior fatal crashes, including one at Inverrary Boulevard and Northwest 46th Street where a motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a turning car, according to the Law Firm of Anidjar & Levine. The stretch connecting Oakland Park Boulevard and Inverrary Boulevard was previously flagged in a Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization study, which recommended Complete Streets retrofits such as buffered bicycle lanes and enhanced pedestrian zones for the corridor, according to the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization. It remains unknown whether Friday's crash occurred within a designated bike lane or whether roadway design played any role, questions that are expected to factor into the ongoing Lauderhill Police Department investigation.
Florida's Bicycle Safety Numbers Are Grim
Florida led the nation in annual bicycle fatalities between 2020 and 2024, averaging 210.2 fatal bicycle crashes per year and earning the country's worst pedalcyclist risk score, according to the Tampa Free Press. Statewide, total bicycle crashes rose by more than 6% in 2025 to 9,914, even as the state recorded 201 bicycle fatalities and overall traffic deaths fell, per data reported by Swope, Rodante P.A. Broward County alone logged 1,005 bicycle crashes in 2024, resulting in 952 injuries and 18 cyclist deaths, according to the Datny Law Firm, keeping the county among the state's most dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians.
Broward County's overall crash numbers remain high as well, with preliminary state data showing 36,871 traffic crashes countywide in 2025 — more than 101 per day — resulting in 199 fatal crashes and 210 total traffic deaths, per the Law Firm of Anidjar & Levine. Under Florida Statute § 316.2065, bicycles are legally classified as vehicles, giving cyclists the same rights and duties as motorists, including the right to use a full traffic lane on narrow roads, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. State law also requires drivers passing a cyclist to maintain at least three feet of clearance under Florida Statute § 316.083, per Weston & Pape.
Federal Money Aims at Safer Streets
Broward County and the Broward MPO have already secured a $5 million federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, matched with $1.25 million in local funds, to build a countywide plan aimed at preventing roadway deaths and serious injuries. Nationally, traffic fatalities dropped 6.7% in 2025 to an estimated 36,640 deaths even as vehicle miles traveled rose by nearly 30 billion miles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Whether any of that funding or planning will reach the stretch of Inverrary Boulevard where Friday's crash occurred remains to be seen.
For now, the identity of the man who died has not been released, and the Lauderhill Police Department's traffic homicide unit continues to investigate. No charges have been announced, and it is not yet known whether the driver will face any.
