Downey police officers responding to a possible street takeover near Firestone Boulevard and Ryerson Avenue early Monday found themselves chasing something bigger: a burglary in progress at a nearby AutoZone, and a second one next door they hadn't even been called about yet. Four adults were arrested by the time it was over, but detectives are still trying to sort out how many people slipped away.
Takeover Call Turns Into Two Burglaries
Officers were dispatched to the area about 3:45 a.m. Monday regarding a report of a possible street takeover, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. While they were still working that call, an alarm monitoring company reported watching roughly 20 people inside the AutoZone at 7075 Firestone Boulevard on CCTV, taking merchandise off the shelves, per the same report. That timeline lines up with CBS News, which put the department's initial response at approximately 3:43 a.m.
As officers worked the AutoZone scene, detectives discovered a second break-in at the Spirit Halloween store at 7171 Firestone Boulevard, an adjacent business in the same commercial stretch, according to The Downey Patriot. Four adults were arrested on suspicion of burglary, though the value of the merchandise taken from either store has not been released, the outlet reports. Downey police detectives are investigating both incidents.
Same Weekend, Same Chain, Different Cities
The Downey burglaries were not an isolated flare-up. An AutoZone near Atlantic and Olympic boulevards in East Los Angeles was looted twice within a 24-hour span over the same weekend, in separate street takeovers on August 8 and August 9, according to OnScene.TV reporting cited in the dossier, with losses topping $50,000 in stolen merchandise plus destroyed computer systems and stolen cash registers. Hoodline covered that East LA ransacking as it unfolded.
A third AutoZone, near Imperial Highway and Central Avenue in Watts, was also broken into and looted during a street takeover early on August 9, the same reporting indicates. A Familiar Target for Takeover Crowds
AutoZone stores have absorbed repeated hits during LA-area street takeovers going back years. Locations on West Century Boulevard, South Hoover Street, and South Main Street were all ransacked during takeovers in 2024 and 2025, including a June 2024 incident that racked up $67,000 in property loss and stolen goods, the dossier notes. A similar pattern played out in July 2025, when Hoodline reported on an AutoZone looting tied to a South LA takeover.
Under California Penal Code Section 490.4, organized retail theft involving two or more people acting together to steal merchandise for resale can be charged as a wobbler carrying up to three years in state prison, according to Justia Law. It remains an open question whether the four people arrested in Downey were organizers of the takeover itself or opportunists who moved in once the crowd and the alarm drew attention away from the stores.
County Data Shows a Mixed Picture
The weekend's burglaries land amid conflicting signals about the scope of the problem. Los Angeles County data released in July showed street takeover incidents in unincorporated areas and contract cities fell 53% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2024, according to the County of Los Angeles. The county's Board of Supervisors also launched a Street Takeover Reduction Workgroup and raised misdemeanor fines to as much as $1,000 for participants, organizers and social media promoters starting in July, per the same county announcement.
Separately, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in May that overall commercial and residential burglaries citywide had dropped more than 30% compared to previous years, according to CBS News. Even so, the Downey burglaries follow a string of high-profile takeover-linked incidents this year, including a 50-car gathering that shut down part of Skid Row earlier this month.
