An Evansville juvenile is in custody after police say a Sunday shots-fired call turned into a foot chase, a hidden firearm, and a search warrant that produced eight more guns. The case puts a fresh spotlight on the city’s ongoing effort to get firearms away from young people before the next gunfire call starts.
According to a news release from the Evansville Police Department, 911 callers reported hearing multiple gunshots near the 1100 block of S. Bedford Avenue and said an unknown male was in a backyard. Officers arrived to find two males running; one jumped a fence and fled, but police later took him into custody and found a firearm hidden in a bush near where the juvenile had been hiding. The department’s post did not identify any injuries.
Police list firearm, marijuana and resisting charges
The juvenile was charged with resisting law enforcement, juvenile in possession of a firearm, and possession of marijuana, police said. He was transported to the YCC, and the investigation remains open; officers did not announce another arrest from the initial chase.
Investigators then applied for a warrant for a residence in the 800 block of Madison Avenue. The court granted it, and officers seized five handguns and three rifles during the search; police said no additional arrests were made after the warrant was executed.
Firearm recoveries continue across Evansville
EPD also said its officers recovered 23 firearms citywide from July 17 through last Friday through proactive enforcement, traffic stops, criminal investigations and community policing. That figure is a department-wide recovery count, not a tally of guns tied to this case, but it shows how a single shots-fired run can quickly become part of a broader weapons investigation.
