Fort Lauderdale became the setting for a 13-year-old Pokémon fan’s dream day, complete with mystery packs, rare collectibles and two favorite online creators. The celebration gave Ty O’Neill a chance to enjoy the hobby he loves after a difficult health battle.
O’Neill, a Canadian native who is in remission after battling cancer, had hoped to attend a Pokémon card party. WSVN 7News reported that Make-A-Wish Southern Florida organized the experience at the Broward Convention Center.
A Pokémon Party Built Around Ty’s Collection
During the event, O’Neill opened mystery Pokémon card packs with two of his favorite content creators and showed them his binder of valuable collectibles. He also designed and gifted custom cards inspired by the pair, turning the party into something personal rather than just another card-opening session.
The celebration came with plenty of extra loot, including Pokémon shirts, hats and additional cards. For a young collector, that is basically the cardboard equivalent of being handed the keys to the kingdom.
Make-A-Wish Turns A Hobby Into A Milestone
Make-A-Wish Southern Florida says it creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses, with experiences shaped around each child’s interests and passions. O’Neill’s wish shows how that mission can take the form of a carefully planned afternoon built around cards, creators and a collection he clearly knows inside and out.
The Fort Lauderdale party also echoes other South Florida wish-granting efforts centered on children’s interests. In 2024, Hoodline reported on a young boy’s Make-A-Wish experience at Zoo Miami, where his dream of becoming a zookeeper became a hands-on day with the animals.
