A 20-year-old man wanted on a child rape charge out of Henderson County is now behind bars after deputy U.S. Marshals and task force officers tracked him down at a home in Maury City, in Crockett County, on August 11. Patton Levi Mathias had been evading law enforcement for nearly three weeks before investigators caught up with him.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, a Henderson County grand jury indicted Mathias on a charge of rape of a child, and the Henderson County Circuit Court issued an arrest warrant on July 24. That left investigators searching for him for roughly three weeks before he was finally located across county lines. As WNBJ 39 reports, the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed Mathias was indicted in Henderson County and taken into custody by deputy marshals and task force officers.
A Multi-County Manhunt Ends in Crockett County
Mathias was ultimately found at a residence in Maury City, well outside the jurisdiction where his indictment originated. The operation was carried out by the U.S. Marshals Service Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force, a multi-agency unit established in 2021 that operates out of offices in Memphis and Jackson and covers 22 counties across West Tennessee, the agency says. Since its founding, the task force has apprehended more than 3,000 violent offenders and sexual predators throughout the region, per the Marshals Service.
Because the indictment was filed in Henderson County, part of Tennessee's 26th Judicial District under District Attorney General Jody S. Pickens, while Mathias was actually apprehended in Crockett County, part of the 28th Judicial District under District Attorney General Frederick Agee and Sheriff Troy Klyce, the case illustrates how these fugitive operations often stretch across judicial lines. Mathias is expected to be extradited back to Henderson County Circuit Court to face the charge.

Under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-522, rape of a child is defined as the unlawful sexual penetration of a victim between eight and twelve years old, according to Justia Law. Mathias's capture in Crockett County happened to fall in the same week as a separate, expanding local investigation. An Alamo couple was booked into the Crockett County Jail on child sex crime charges that same day, August 11, as Hoodline reported in its earlier coverage, third arrest in weeks. The two cases are unrelated, but together they point to an intense stretch of felony sex-crime enforcement activity across rural West Tennessee involving both local and federal authorities.
