A young girl was seriously injured Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle in the 6300 block of Holly Street in Commerce City, according to police. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, and the child was transported to the hospital in serious condition.
The Commerce City Police Department characterized the crash as an apparent tragic accident in an update posted to its Facebook page, and asked the public to keep those involved in their thoughts. Investigators have not released additional details about how the collision unfolded, and the department has not said whether any citations are expected.
A Corridor With a History of Close Calls
Holly Street has drawn scrutiny before. Just weeks ago, Commerce City police arrested a driver on the same street near an elementary school hosting a summer program after the vehicle jumped a curb and traveled the wrong way on the sidewalk, with officers citing suspected extreme intoxication and reporting open alcohol containers and drugs inside the car, as Hoodline previously reported. In October 2024, a teenager was killed in a hit-and-run at the intersection of Holly Street and East 58th Avenue, a case that left the community in mourning.
City planning documents help explain why. An East 64th Avenue Corridor Study from the City of Commerce City found that the Holly Street corridor near Central Elementary School requires exclusive pedestrian signal phases because of heavy student foot traffic, even as turning-vehicle conflicts remain an ongoing concern. Local parents and school representatives have previously pushed for stronger speed and red-light enforcement along the corridor.
Colorado's Pedestrian Deaths Keep Climbing
This crash lands amid a grim statewide pattern. Colorado Department of Transportation data reported in March showed that 127 pedestrians were killed on state roadways in 2025, nearly double the toll from a decade earlier and accounting for close to 20% of all statewide traffic fatalities, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Adams County, home to Commerce City, logged 99 pedestrian fatalities between 2020 and 2025, second only to Denver County among all Colorado counties, per the same state figures reported by the Kiowa County Press.
Statewide traffic deaths overall also ticked upward, with Colorado recording 701 fatalities in 2025 compared to 689 the year before, a rise tied to increases in impaired driving and injuries among pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, according to the Colorado Sun. That uptick ended a two-year decline in total state traffic deaths.
What the Law Requires of Drivers
Colorado law places specific obligations on drivers around pedestrians. Under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-802, drivers must yield the right-of-way by slowing or stopping for pedestrians crossing at marked or unmarked crosswalks where there is no traffic signal, and are barred from passing a vehicle stopped at such a crossing. A separate statute, § 42-4-807, establishes a broader duty of care requiring drivers to avoid colliding with pedestrians on any roadway and explicitly calls for heightened caution around children or confused individuals, regardless of whether they are in a designated crosswalk, according to Dan Caplis Law.
Commerce City has joined Adams County and seven neighboring municipalities in adopting the Adams County Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, an effort aimed at bringing traffic-calming infrastructure and engineering upgrades, including raised medians and sidewalk connections, to high-risk corridors, according to Adams County Government. Whether Holly Street will see additional safety measures following Wednesday's crash has not been announced. Commerce City police have not released the girl's condition beyond describing her injuries as serious, and no further updates on the investigation had been issued as of Wednesday night.
