South Bend Police were dispatched shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday to the intersection of Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard after reports of gunfire, arriving to find multiple injured victims at the commercial development that sits directly across from the University of Notre Dame. Officers detained several individuals at the scene, though their involvement in the shooting was not immediately clear. Police have advised the public to avoid Eddy Street Commons while the investigation continues.
The shooting occurred at the northern entrance of the development, according to 95.3 MNC, which reported that officers located multiple victims with varying injuries once they arrived. The South Bend Police Department confirmed in an active-scene post that officers responded to the shooting and detained people whose role in the incident remains unknown. Police said they would release more information as the investigation develops. The exact number of victims, their medical conditions, and whether those detained were suspects or bystanders have not yet been disclosed.
A Pattern of Late-Night Gunfire at the Complex
Saturday’s shooting follows two back-to-back gunfire incidents at Eddy Street Commons during Notre Dame home football weekends last September, a pattern documented by the student newspaper. A September 13, 2025 shooting near Brother’s Bar & Grill damaged five vehicles and two apartments, and a September 21, 2025 incident shattered a window at the Embassy Suites hotel, per the same account. Those incidents prompted South Bend Police to ramp up high-visibility patrols, which led to 13 unrelated arrests around the complex in a single weekend for offenses including criminal trespass and weapons violations, the paper reported.
Police have also touted specific weapons seizures at the development. During a September 2025 enforcement detail, officers arrested five people and seized three firearms, including one stolen gun, after a suspect tried to flee behind a commercial building, according to a South Bend Police Department Facebook post. The department has maintained a dedicated substation inside Eddy Street Commons since 2020, established to keep a continuous law enforcement presence in the district after earlier crowd-control challenges and requests from commercial tenants, per the South Bend Tribune.
A $220 Million Hub Steps From Campus
Eddy Street Commons sits directly across Angela Boulevard from Notre Dame and functions as the primary off-campus dining, retail, and residential corridor for more than 15,000 students and university visitors, according to developer Kite Realty Group. The development, built through a public-private partnership between Notre Dame and the Indianapolis-based firm, represents a $220 million mixed-use, new-urbanist district with more than 112,000 square feet of commercial space alongside apartments, townhomes, and hotels. South Bend Police coordinate safety operations directly with Kite Realty and fellow developer Buckingham Properties, tailoring on-duty and off-duty officer shifts to daily event schedules and crowd levels, the department said on Facebook.
Despite the recurring safety concerns, commercial leasing at the complex has stayed active, with anchor tenant Trader Joe’s and fast-casual additions like CAVA, BIBIBOP Asian Grill, and JINYA Ramen Bar arriving between 2020 and 2026 — a run of openings Hoodline previously covered when JINYA opened this spring. Property management has increasingly steered storefront conversions toward dining concepts that draw student foot traffic, the student paper noted in February.
Citywide Numbers Down, but Concerns Persist
The overnight shooting comes even as South Bend’s broader gun violence statistics have trended downward. City data reviewed by WVPE showed total gun violence incidents fell from 508 to 449 between January and September of last year compared with the same period in 2024, part of a year-over-year decline city officials have continued to highlight into mid-2026. Even so, high-profile shootings in dense foot-traffic zones like Eddy Street Commons continue to draw significant community concern, the outlet reported.
Investigators have not said what led to Saturday’s gunfire or whether it is connected to the earlier incidents at the same complex. Hoodline has reported on other recent South Bend violence, including a deadly shooting on College Street earlier this month. South Bend Police said they will release further details on the Eddy Street Commons investigation as it continues.
