Johnny Knoxville returned to his old South Knoxville stomping grounds Friday with a hometown gift that should make local athletes very happy: a completely revamped weight room at South-Doyle High School. The “Jackass” star helped make the project happen, then showed up to unveil the finished space himself.
According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Knoxville visited the school where he once attended classes and played baseball, officially revealing the new facility for students and athletes. It is a full-circle moment for the Knoxville native, whose latest stunt involved improving a school instead of launching himself off something.
South-Doyle is the modern successor to the Young, Doyle and South high schools, and the school’s own history page describes it as a community-centered Knox County campus serving students in southern Knoxville. The school’s athletic department is led by Randy Moore, a longtime friend of Knoxville’s who helped get the project moving.
A Fundraiser Turned Old Equipment Into A New Training Space
The effort began earlier this year after Moore reached out to Knoxville for help with the school’s weight room. In a report republished by WATE, school officials said much of the old equipment dated back roughly 25 years, while some benches had damaged padding and the room’s dumbbells were made of concrete.
Knoxville teamed up with South Carolina-based Sorinex Exercise Equipment to launch the “Knoxville Strong” merchandise collection, with proceeds directed toward new equipment for South-Doyle. The company’s official collection includes shirts, hoodies, a shaker bottle, a flag and other South-Doyle-themed gear.
The campaign also reached beyond apparel. Earlier coverage said Knoxville partnered with Charitybuzz on a sweepstakes and auction connected to the “Jackass” movie franchise, creating another fundraising route for his alma mater’s athletics and academics.
Why The Upgrade Matters Beyond Football
The new facility is intended for the broader student body, not just one team or one season. Moore told WATE that access to better equipment and a more inviting workout space could motivate students and provide benefits that extend beyond their time in high school.
That broader mission is important at a school where the weight room had been asked to do more with less for years. Now, South-Doyle students have a modern place to train, and Knoxville gets to point to a hometown comeback story with something sturdier than a celebrity cameo: equipment that should keep working long after the cameras leave.
