A 43-year-old man kicked in a bedroom door and fatally shot his girlfriend as she tried to flee, according to police, in front of three children inside a South Kansas City home. Nevada Mosley, 38, was pronounced dead after the August 1 shooting on Agnes Avenue in the North Town Fork Creek neighborhood, and her boyfriend, Antwon Shirley, now faces multiple felony charges in Jackson County.
Kansas City police officers who responded to the residence found the bedroom door had been kicked in, with shell casings and paperwork belonging to both Shirley and Mosley scattered on the bedroom floor, according to Law & Crime. Police probable cause statements indicate one of the three children in the home heard “the sound of something clicking” right before the gunfire began, while two other children were reportedly asleep when the attack started. Per the children, Shirley pointed a gun at Mosley while she was in bed and then shot her as she tried to leave the room, according to WKRC.
Children Inside the Home During the Attack
Three children told police that Shirley killed their mother, per the same WKRC report. First responders reportedly found a juvenile standing outside the home with the front door open when they arrived, according to WDAF and the Kansas City Star, as cited in that report. Emergency crews transported Mosley from the Agnes Avenue home to Research Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to KC Knowledges.
A witness described Shirley as very jealous, and said the couple had not been getting along before the shooting, per WKRC's reporting. After the shooting, Shirley reportedly contacted a relative and said he was going to turn himself in, per that relative and a witness. He allegedly told the relative he had snapped and had done something bad. Before surrendering, Shirley abandoned his car and threw away his phone, according to the outlet.

Charges and Custody Status
Shirley turned himself in to police the day after the shooting, on August 2, and now faces second-degree murder, burglary, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He is being held in the Jackson County jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 2 at 1 p.m., per Law & Crime.
The North Town Fork Creek neighborhood where the shooting occurred sits in south Kansas City near the Town Fork Creek Greenway. Hoodline previously reported the initial police response to the shooting before Shirley surrendered and charges were formally filed.
What Missouri Law Means for Shirley's Case
If convicted of second-degree murder, Shirley would face a Class A felony under Missouri Revised Statute § 565.021, according to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes. The case also includes an armed criminal action charge.
The case also includes an unlawful possession charge. Shirley's criminal history relevant to that count has not been detailed publicly, and remains an open question heading into next month's hearing, along with formal custody arrangements for the surviving children.
A Grim Weekend Amid an Overall Drop in Homicides
