A 21-year-old Kansas City woman was hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday evening after she was struck by a car near the University of Central Missouri campus in Warrensburg, just hours before the start of fall semester classes. She was walking near West South Street, just east of Washington Street by the UCM Store at The Crossing, when a 2020 Dodge Charger hit her around 7 p.m.
According to FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the woman crossed in front of the Dodge Charger, which was being driven by a 21-year-old man traveling westbound on West South Street. The man was uninjured, and the woman was taken to Western Missouri Medical Center; her condition remains unknown, per the station's report.
Local radio station KMMO reported that Highway Patrol crash logs place the woman inside the marked crosswalk leading from The Crossing complex across West South Street at the moment she was struck. That detail matters because Missouri law generally puts the burden on drivers to yield in marked crosswalks, though the two accounts differ on whether she was inside the crosswalk or had crossed in front of the vehicle outside it, and Hoodline could not independently reconcile the discrepancy.
A Campus Packed for Move-In Weekend
The crash landed in the middle of one of the busiest stretches of the academic calendar at UCM. Move-in activities kicked off August 13 and continued through Sunday, bringing nearly 1,000 new students and their families to the Warrensburg campus, according to the university's own scheduling records. Fall semester classes were set to begin the very next morning, Monday, August 17.
The Crossing at South Campus, located at 114 West South Street, houses the official UCM Store along with student housing and retail space, making the stretch of roadway a high-traffic pedestrian corridor even on an ordinary day. With move-in weekend layered on top, foot and vehicle traffic around campus streets was especially heavy Sunday evening.
What Missouri Law Says About Crosswalks
Under Missouri Revised Statutes § 300.375, drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing within a marked crosswalk when no traffic signal is present or operating. A separate statute, § 300.390, requires pedestrians crossing outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to yield to vehicles on the roadway instead. Which statute applies here hinges on the exact location of the crossing, a detail the two available accounts describe differently.
Missouri State Highway Patrol was identified in the crash reports. It was not immediately known whether the agency's Major Crash Investigation Unit had been asked to reconstruct the scene.
