An unidentified burglar forced open a metal gate on the rear door of a clothing store at 5625 Broadway early Saturday morning and walked out with roughly $28,000 in clothing, shoes, and jewelry. The break-in happened at approximately 6:20 a.m. in the confines of the NYPD’s 50th Precinct, which covers the Kingsbridge, Riverdale, and Fieldston sections of the northwest Bronx.
According to NYPD Crime Stoppers, the suspect entered the store after breaking through the rear-door gate, then removed the merchandise before fleeing to parts unknown. No arrests have been announced, and the department has not released a description of the individual responsible. Anyone with information is asked to submit a tip anonymously by calling 800-577-TIPS or sending a direct message to @NYPDTips, with rewards of up to $3,500 available through the New York City Police Foundation-backed Crime Stoppers program for tips that lead to an arrest and indictment.

A Familiar Vulnerability at This Address
This is not the first time the Broadway storefront has been targeted through its rear security measures. Back in June 2020, thieves smashed a window and damaged both the front door and the rolling metal gate to get inside during off-hours, according to The Riverdale Press. It is unclear whether the current investigation has turned up any connection between the two incidents, and the exact identity of the store operating at the address at the time of Saturday's burglary has not been publicly specified.
The building itself carries some neighborhood history: it originally opened in February 1927 as the Marble Hill Theatre, a 1,638-seat colonial-style movie house operated by RKO, before it was converted into commercial retail space in the late 1960s, per the Theatre Historical Society of America. The address sits within the Kingsbridge Business Improvement District, a commercial corridor established in 2001 that runs along Broadway from West 230th to West 236th Streets and represents more than 200 local merchants.
Charges a Suspect Could Face
If a suspect is identified and caught, they would likely face two separate Class D felony charges under New York law. Unlawfully entering a commercial building with intent to commit a crime inside qualifies as Burglary in the Third Degree under Penal Law § 140.20, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of seven years in state prison and, notably, does not require any violence or weapon. Given the roughly $28,000 value of the stolen goods, the theft itself would also likely qualify as Grand Larceny in the Third Degree under Penal Law § 155.35, since it clears the $3,000 threshold for that charge — another Class D felony punishable by up to seven years behind bars for a first-time offender.
Break-In Comes Amid Falling Burglary Numbers
The timing is notable given the direction local crime statistics have been trending. Burglary complaints in the 50th Precinct have fallen 40 percent year-to-date through August 2, dropping from 85 incidents over the same stretch in 2025 to just 51 this year, according to NYPD CompStat data. Overall major felonies in the precinct are down nearly 7 percent, and grand larceny complaints have declined more than 17 percent to 292 incidents so far in 2026.
That local dip mirrors a citywide pattern. NYPD figures show burglaries across all of New York City fell 14.7 percent in July compared to the same month in 2025, part of a broader 12.7 percent drop in major index crimes citywide. The 50th Precinct, which is leading the investigation into Saturday's break-in, is headquartered at 3450 Kingsbridge Avenue.
The burglary adds to a string of recent property and street crimes reported in the Kingsbridge area this year, including a daylight e-bike necklace snatching earlier this week. For now, investigators are relying on the public for leads, and the case remains open with no suspect named.
