A Lake Havasu City couple facing divorce proceedings were found dead Saturday afternoon after an argument escalated into a fatal shooting. Police are describing the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide.
Officers found 49-year-old Laura Smith and 60-year-old Brian Smith inside a residence around 1:45 p.m., according to KTAR News. Investigators said the couple had been arguing about their divorce proceedings before the violence began.
Son Tried To Break Up The Argument
Police said Brian Smith’s adult son attempted to de-escalate the dispute, but the two men became involved in a physical altercation. Afterward, Brian Smith allegedly retrieved a shotgun from another room and shot Laura Smith multiple times before moving to a separate room and fatally shooting himself.
The Lake Havasu City case follows a suspected murder-suicide in Marana in May. The Marana Police Department said a woman was shot outside her home and her ex-husband later died by suicide; their two children were found unharmed.
