Chicago is waking to mostly clear skies and temperatures in the low 60s Monday, with a mild afternoon ahead. The lakefront has a safety concern this morning, while a stormier turn is already taking shape for midweek.
Sunny Monday, Warmer Tuesday
The National Weather Service is calling for mostly sunny skies Monday, light east-northeast winds and a high near 77 degrees. Patchy fog or low clouds may linger early in some areas but should improve by midmorning. Near Lake Michigan, an afternoon breeze could hold temperatures in the mid-70s, while inland spots reach the low 80s, according to the National Weather Service Chicago.
Monday night should be mostly clear, with a low around 65. Tuesday turns warmer, reaching about 83 degrees under mostly sunny skies with southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph. Wednesday brings a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day, rising to about 80% Wednesday night as heavy rain and localized flooding become possible.
Lakefront Warning Runs Through 9 A.M.
A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through 9 a.m. Monday for Lake Michigan beaches in Lake, northern Cook and central Cook counties. Waves of 3 to 6 feet and dangerous currents are expected, so officials are urging people to stay out of the water and avoid piers, jetties, breakwalls and other shoreline structures.
The Chicago Park District advises visitors to check beach flags and swim only when lifeguards are on duty, generally from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., through its beach dashboard. Conditions should turn quieter late Thursday into Friday, when skies clear and temperatures settle near 80.
Summer warmth returns for the weekend, with highs around 84 Saturday and 86 Sunday. Sunday carries a slight chance of morning showers or thunderstorms, but otherwise looks mostly sunny.
