A construction-site emergency in Butler County sent one person to a trauma center Monday evening after crews found the patient at the bottom of a trench. The rescue required a coordinated response from township firefighters, county technical rescue specialists and Trenton crews.
The incident happened shortly after 6 p.m. on Kennel Road in Madison Township, according to Local 12. Madison Township firefighters were initially dispatched for a reported fall, but crews determined after arriving that someone was at the bottom of a construction trench. Butler County Technical Rescue teams and the City of Trenton Fire Department were called in, and responders stabilized and extricated the patient before transport to a local trauma center.
Butler County’s Technical Rescue Team Handles Trench Emergencies
The county’s specialized rescue response is built for incidents that regular fire crews may not be equipped to handle alone. The Butler County Fire Chiefs says the technical rescue team includes more than 65 specially trained technicians, with expertise in trench rescue, confined-space incidents, high-angle rescues, structure collapses and water emergencies.
Officials Have Not Released More Details On The Injury
No name, age or additional information about the patient’s condition was immediately released, and authorities did not disclose what caused the person to end up in the trench. The call was not described as a trench collapse, so there is no indication from the initial report that the excavation itself failed.
Still, trench rescues are treated as highly hazardous operations because soil can shift without warning and responders may face unstable walls, falling material or limited access. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration identifies cave-ins as the primary trenching hazard and advises protective systems, safe entry and exit routes, and inspections by a competent person before workers enter an excavation.
