A man was found dead inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a Far East El Paso shopping center that includes Walmart, Lowe's and PetSmart, El Paso police said Wednesday morning. Officers responded to the 3700 block of Joe Battle Boulevard near Montana Avenue just before 9 a.m. after a passerby driving through the area reported seeing something unusual inside a parked car. The man is believed to be in his 30s, and his identity had not been confirmed as investigators worked the scene.
The El Paso Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Unit is leading the investigation, according to KTSM 9 News. Police spokesman Adrian Cisneros said officers are still working to determine what happened and will share more once they know whether foul play was involved. Detectives have not yet confirmed whether a crime occurred, and they continue working to determine what happened, police said.
Surveillance Footage And A Sedan Left With Its Door Open
Investigators spent several hours processing the scene, per the outlet's report, reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses and collecting evidence. Crime tape was placed around part of the retail space while detectives attempted to identify potential witnesses. A black four-door sedan was seen parked in the blocked-off area with its driver-side door open.
Authorities have not released additional details about the vehicle beyond that description. Police said the man had apparently been inside the vehicle for some time before he was discovered, a detail that carries extra weight during El Paso's summer heat. Interior vehicle temperatures can climb 19 degrees within 10 minutes and reach 129 degrees within half an hour once outside highs hit roughly 95 degrees, according to Third Coast Auto Group.
Foul Play Not Confirmed, But Detectives Aren't Ruling It Out
Detectives have not determined a cause of death, though they are treating the case as though foul play may be involved, per police. Officers said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

The Crimes Against Persons Unit is a specialized branch of the department's Major Crimes Division, staffed by 17 detectives, five officers, four sergeants and one lieutenant who investigate homicides, unexpected deaths, missing persons and violent felonies, per the department's own staffing figures. Citywide, El Paso reported six homicides in the first quarter of 2026, down from eight during the same stretch of 2025, according to the Major Cities Chiefs Association. The department logged 24 homicides for all of 2025, down from 31 in 2024, per the same association's annual report. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office separately reported a 14 percent overall reduction in crime across its jurisdiction in 2025, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
The shopping center anchors a stretch of Joe Battle Boulevard near Montana Avenue that includes some of Far East El Paso's busiest retail names, such as Target.
