Memphis is starting Monday under clear skies, but the air is already muggy and the heat is about to turn serious. Temperatures will climb from the mid-70s early to about 95 degrees this afternoon, with humidity pushing the heat index above 100.
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday across Shelby County and surrounding parts of the Mid-South. The National Weather Service in Memphis says heat index values could reach 108 degrees, creating a risk of heat illness for people spending extended time outdoors.
Sunny Skies, Little Rain Relief
Monday will stay mostly sunny, with southwest winds around 5 to 10 mph. Rain is unlikely in Memphis, although an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm remains possible in the broader region.
Tonight will be mostly clear, with temperatures falling only to around 77 degrees. Humidity will keep the overnight heat index near 105, so the evening may offer less relief than the dark sky suggests.
Heat Builds Through The Weekend
The hot pattern is expected to stick around all week. Tuesday should reach 96 degrees, Wednesday 97, Thursday 99 and Friday 98, with mostly sunny skies and heat indexes in the triple digits on several afternoons.
Saturday and Sunday could both reach 100 degrees. Overnight lows will remain in the upper 70s, leaving homes, pavement and people with limited time to cool down between hot afternoons.
Plan Around The Hottest Hours
Residents should drink plenty of fluids, take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon peak. Check on older adults, neighbors and anyone without reliable air conditioning, and never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
