An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday as temperatures surge through the day. Memphis should reach the upper 90s around midday and top out near 102 degrees by late afternoon, with light south winds doing little to ease the strain.
The forecast high is about 10 degrees above the typical August 19 high of 92 degrees, according to National Weather Service climate data. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid prolonged sun exposure and check on relatives and neighbors.
Storm Chances Return Overnight
Wednesday night will remain warm, with a low around 78 and a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 a.m. Thursday. The broader National Weather Service forecast also points to possible storms spreading into the Mid-South overnight.
Forecasters say damaging winds and localized heavy rain would be the main concerns if stronger storms develop, although the exact timing and location remain uncertain. Thursday night carries a higher 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall totals of roughly one-tenth to one-quarter inch possible.
Heat Eases Slightly Thursday And Friday
Thursday will still be hot, but a few degrees cooler, with a high near 96 and heat index values up to 106. A slight chance of storms is possible before noon, followed by mostly sunny skies.
Friday should bring another mostly sunny day with a high near 94 after a small chance of early rain. The weekend stays sunny and hot, with highs around 96 on Saturday and 95 on Sunday, while nighttime lows settle in the low to mid-70s.
