Nashville woke to clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70s Sunday morning, but the day is headed toward a dangerous peak. Sunshine will push the city near 102 degrees, with the heat index reaching as high as 111.
The National Weather Service Nashville forecast calls for virtually no rain Sunday and southwest winds between 0 and 10 mph. The Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 7 p.m. Sunday, while nearby areas under a Heat Advisory face similarly oppressive conditions.
Extreme Heat Warning Runs Through Sunday Evening
Sunday afternoon will be the most hazardous part of the weekend, especially for people working or exercising outdoors. Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air conditioning when possible, avoiding direct sun and checking on relatives and neighbors who may be vulnerable to heat illness.
Nashville's extreme heat response page lists cooling shelters and heat-patrol resources for residents who need relief. The city's Office of Homeless Services says heat patrols can provide water, cool rides and connections to service providers during high-heat days.
Monday Brings Storm Risk And Stronger Winds
Sunday night will stay warm and muggy, with a low around 78 and mostly clear skies. A few showers or thunderstorms could develop Monday evening as a boundary moves through Middle Tennessee, although the chance of rain remains limited Sunday night.
Monday's high should reach about 98, with heat index values again near 111. The National Weather Service says isolated stronger storms are possible during the afternoon and early evening, mainly east of Interstate 65, where damaging wind gusts would be the primary concern.
Brief Relief Tuesday Before Heat Rebuilds
Tuesday offers a short break from the worst of the heat, with patchy fog possible before 8 a.m., followed by sunny skies and a high near 95. Overnight temperatures should fall into the low 70s, bringing somewhat lower humidity for a welcome change.
That relief will not last long. Wednesday is expected to climb back near 99 degrees, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms returning Wednesday night and continuing at times Thursday and Friday as highs ease into the low 90s.
