The University of Oklahoma is rolling out a brand-new paid tailgating option at Boyd Lawn just in time for the Sooners' season opener, giving fans a fully furnished setup without the hassle of hauling in their own gear. The turnkey packages arrive as Oklahoma prepares to host UTEP at a 7 p.m. kickoff in Norman, marking the first real test of the new system on a live gameday.
Booking a Hands-Off Tailgate Before Kickoff
According to KOKH, the turnkey tailgating packages let fans enjoy gameday without any setup or teardown work of their own. Reservations, including optional food and beverage add-ons, are handled through soonergameday.com ahead of each home game.
The company actually running the operation is REVELxp, which serves as OU Athletics' official fan experience partner and handles everything from tent installation to furnishings and breakdown. REVELxp hosts more than 10,000 college football tailgates a year and works with over 100 college and professional sports properties nationwide, a scale that gives Oklahoma a taste of a system already common elsewhere in the SEC.
The new tailgate zone sits at Boyd Lawn near the corner of Boyd Street and Asp Avenue, directly in front of Carpenter Hall and the Jones Family Welcome Center, according to Sports Illustrated. That puts the paid setups right next to Campus Corner, the dining and retail strip that draws heavy foot traffic from fans before kickoff.
North Oval Tailgating Stays Free for Everyone
Fans who'd rather skip the reservation fee still have the option of free, first-come, first-served tailgating on the North Oval, open to all fans this season. Per the same report, OU recommends bringing your own tents, chairs and equipment if you go that route instead of booking a package.
OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. said, according to the same report, that the response to opening the North Oval for public tailgating last season exceeded expectations. The university has framed the Boyd Lawn packages as an addition alongside the North Oval's open-access setup, not a replacement for it.
Marching Bands, Mascots and the Alumni Tailgate
Per the same report, the North Oval's gameday lineup includes performances from the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band, mascot appearances, food trucks, giveaways and indoor restrooms throughout the season. OU's official alumni tailgate, known as Boomer Bash, also runs as part of the North Oval's rotating gameday activities.
A Three-Season Buildout Tied to the Move to the SEC
Oklahoma's tailgating footprint has grown every year since the school's move to the Southeastern Conference. Per OU Daily, the university first opened areas along Boyd Lawn and Asp Avenue back in July 2024, as leadership looked to match the tailgating traditions fans expect in the SEC.
The historic North Oval followed a year later. In a July 2025 announcement, the University of Oklahoma detailed pre-marked, 15-foot by 15-foot tailgating spaces and a managed 15-minute vehicle drop-off window at West Boyd Street and South University Boulevard starting at 6 p.m. on Fridays before home games, warning that unattended vehicles left on the loop outside that window are subject to towing. This year's turnkey packages at Boyd Lawn complete that three-season progression.
Road Closures and Parking Fans Should Expect
Getting to either tailgate spot means navigating Norman's gameday traffic pattern. The city closes Lindsey Street to general traffic four hours before kickoff between Elm Avenue and Jenkins Avenue, and OU Athletics advises visitors to use the Waze app since some closures aren't reflected on standard maps.
Paid cash parking in university lots starts at $30 on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the Ticketmaster gameday guide. That same guide notes OU Athletics also runs its Party at the Palace tailgate, a free public event with games, live music and food vendors on the stadium's north end starting three and a half hours before kickoff, along the Walk of Champions where players enter through Gate 6.

The Campus Corner Association holds its free Crimson Friday Concert Series on Asp Avenue and White Street, according to Visit Norman, an event launched in August 2024 alongside College Colors Day to encourage fans to wear school gear into the weekend.
The Ground Beneath the Tents Has Its Own History
The North Oval carries a name most fans skip over: Parrington Oval, officially designated in 1942 for Vernon Louis Parrington, an early OU professor and football coach who later won a Pulitzer Prize, according to University of Oklahoma Libraries. The oval is anchored on its south end by Evans Hall, the Cherokee Gothic building that houses the university president's office, tying this season's tailgate expansion to ground that has been part of campus life for more than a century.
