The 1900 block of Dana Avenue sits directly along the southern edge of Xavier University's campus, a stretch that functions as a key east-west route for students, faculty, and neighborhood residents alike, according to the City of Cincinnati.
That proximity to campus explains why both agencies showed up together. Xavier University Police Department maintains full campus police authority and coordinates joint response protocols with Cincinnati Police for incidents along perimeter streets like Dana Avenue, per Xavier University's own policies.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
This is not the first time gunfire has rattled this stretch of Evanston. In May 2024, 18-year-old high school graduate Lamon Wiggins was fatally shot in the 2300 block of Dana Avenue during an early-morning graduation gathering that had drawn roughly 50 people, according to WHIO TV. More recently, in September 2025, 25-year-old Jawan Tyree Bates was killed in a shooting near Montgomery Road and Brewster Avenue, just blocks from the Xavier campus, as reported by FOX19.
