A person was shot once in the body just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday near Papani Drive and Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans East, and police still haven't said how the victim is doing or why the gunfire happened. Emergency medical services rushed the victim to the hospital from the scene, but authorities have not released any update on their condition.
The New Orleans Police Department confirmed it is investigating the shooting, according to WDSU, which first reported the incident. Reporter Aubry Killion noted that no information about a possible motive has been released, and the case remains an active investigation as detectives work to piece together what happened along the busy corridor.
A Corridor With a Recent History of Violence
Papani Drive sits just off Chef Menteur Highway, a stretch of U.S. Route 90 that has seen its share of gunfire in recent months. The corridor was the site of a fatal shooting outside a convenience store in the 7900 block in March 2026 and a double homicide in the 14700 block in December 2025, according to NOPD News. Chef Menteur Highway itself is one of the oldest developed thoroughfares in New Orleans East, built along a natural levee ridge that connected early agricultural settlements before the area's mid-20th-century suburban expansion, per historical records maintained by the City of New Orleans.
Sunday's shooting adds to a string of recent violent incidents that NOPD's Seventh District has been working through. Just days earlier, Hoodline reported on a SWAT standoff after a barricade in the same police district, and an armed robbery in which a woman was wrestled to the ground earlier in the week.
Crime Numbers Tell a Different Story District-Wide
Despite the recent run of incidents, the broader crime trend in New Orleans East points sharply downward. Citywide violent crime — including homicides, nonfatal shootings, carjackings, and armed robberies — dropped 70% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2022, with nonfatal shootings falling from 237 to 82 incidents, according to NOPD News statistics released in July. In the Seventh District specifically, which covers New Orleans East and stretches across roughly 133 square miles from its station at 10101 Dwyer Road, overall violent crime fell 74% between 2022 and mid-2026, including a 61% year-over-year drop in nonfatal shootings during the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2025.
The Seventh District has also ramped up proactive patrols in recent weeks, including a DWI saturation patrol operation conducted across the district in late July as part of broader efforts to increase police visibility in New Orleans East, per NOPD News.
What Comes Next for the Investigation
No arrests have been announced, and NOPD has not released a suspect description or details about what may have led to the shooting. Louisiana law provides for severe penalties if an arrest is eventually made and charges are filed; a shooting that results in bodily harm can be prosecuted as attempted second-degree murder under La. R.S. 14:27 and 14:30.1, carrying a statutory penalty of 10 to 50 years in prison at hard labor without the possibility of parole, probation, or a suspended sentence, according to the Law Offices of Ossie Brown. Prosecutors could alternatively pursue aggravated battery charges under La. R.S. 14:34, a felony that carries up to 10 years in prison and fines as high as $5,000, per Regan Law.
