Pembroke Pines Man, 29, Accused of Stealing BMW, Then Shooting at Mom's Bedroom

A 29-year-old man is facing carjacking and premeditated attempted murder charges after Pembroke Pines police say he stole a BMW from a local dealership, drove it to his mother's house, and fired several shots at her bedroom doors. Khalil Smith was arrested on Monday and has since had his bond denied by a judge.

According to NBC 6 South Florida, the case began at BMW of Pembroke Pines, where Smith arrived saying he was interested in buying a car and asked about a BMW on the showroom floor. Detectives say he gave his identification to the dealership before the encounter turned violent. Per detectives, Smith punched the dealer in the abdomen, told him to get back, and then drove the BMW straight out of the showroom, smashing through the glass French doors in the process. The dealership, located at 14800 Sheridan Street near Interstate 75, operates out of a multi-story glass showroom rebuilt in 2019 by Holman Automotive, according to Miller Construction Company.

From the Showroom to His Mother's Bedroom

Police say Smith then drove the stolen BMW directly to his mother's house. Per the arrest report, Smith's mother had previously kicked him out of the home, telling investigators he was disrespectful and did not help around the house — details she attributed to what she described as his anger issues.

Surveillance video reviewed by detectives showed a masked man approaching the woman's back patio and putting on a black ski mask and camouflage jacket before walking toward the home. The masked man raised what appeared to be a gun toward the master bedroom's glass French doors and fired several shots, four of which were aimed toward the bed, according to detectives. Smith then reportedly walked back to the front of the house and jumped over a fence before returning to the BMW.

Physical Evidence Tied Smith to Both Scenes

Officers who located the stolen BMW found a .22 caliber handgun inside with an empty magazine, along with a black ski mask and a tan backpack. Detectives say the shell casings recovered matched the gun found with Smith. At the scene of the shooting, investigators found 10 spent .22 caliber shell casings, the outlet's report notes.

Officers received reports of a shooting and, following the investigation, detained Smith in the area before arresting him. The arrest report indicates Smith was kicked out of the Navy in 2025, though the exact circumstances and timeline of his separation from military service have not been detailed publicly.

Bond Denied, Facing Decades-Long Exposure

A judge denied Smith's bond following his arrest. In Broward County's 17th Judicial Circuit, felony arrestees must appear in First Appearance Court within 24 hours of booking, where a magistrate reviews probable cause and considers victim input before setting bond conditions, according to the Office of Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor. Those hearings are held daily at the Main Courthouse West Wing in Fort Lauderdale.

The charges Smith faces carry severe statutory weight. Under Florida Statute § 812.133, carjacking committed with a firearm is a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison, according to attorney Richard Hornsby. Florida's 10-20-Life law, codified in Florida Statute § 775.087, mandates a 20-year minimum prison sentence whenever a defendant discharges a firearm during an enumerated felony such as carjacking or attempted murder, according to the Brancato Law Firm. Separately, Florida Statute § 782.04 defines attempted murder as an intentional act that could result in death but does not, carrying penalties up to life imprisonment when paired with firearm enhancements, per the Stewart Law Firm.

A Pattern Seen Across South Florida

Firearms are involved in roughly 75 percent of all carjacking incidents recorded nationwide, according to Department of Justice victimization data cited by Musca Law. The dealership carjacking adds to a string of recent violent incidents Pembroke Pines police have handled this year, including an armed carjacking suspect captured hiding in a trash can after a chase along Interstate 95, and the Everglades helicopter rescue earlier this month. Pembroke Pines police previously investigated an October 2025 shooting outside Rickey's Sports Bar and Grill that left one person dead, one critically injured, and resulted in a second-degree murder charge.
