A Port St. Lucie intersection became the scene of a fatal two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon when an 86-year-old woman’s Hyundai was struck by an SUV. She was taken to a Fort Pierce hospital with critical injuries and later died, while the teenage driver of the SUV was not hurt.
According to CBS 12, the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. at Southwest Savona Boulevard and Southwest Lawndale Avenue. Police said Marie R. Martin was driving a 2006 Hyundai Elantra west on Lawndale Avenue when she entered the intersection near a stop sign and failed to yield to a northbound 2026 Honda HR-V.
The Honda struck the driver’s side of Martin’s car, leaving her trapped inside until emergency crews extricated her. The Traffic Homicide Unit “continues to investigate” the collision, CBS 12 reported.
Crash Lands On A Corridor With A Troubled Safety Record
The collision occurred along a stretch of SW Savona Boulevard that had already drawn added traffic-safety attention. Earlier coverage from WPTV said Port St. Lucie police had identified the corridor for extra enforcement because of a high occurrence of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes.
