Country music legend Randy Travis made an unexpected trip to the Chicago area Friday, showing up at City of Hope Chicago to meet a cancer patient who had named him as her wish. Travis and his wife, Mary, flew in to surprise her in person, turning a difficult hospital day into a very different kind of headline.
According to ABC7 Chicago, City of Hope contacted the couple after learning the patient was fighting cancer and wanted to meet the singer. Travis also spent time with hospital employees during the visit, bringing a little country-music star power to the cancer center.
A Chicago-Area Stop Built Around One Fan’s Wish
The visit took place at City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago, a specialized facility in Zion, just over the Wisconsin-Illinois line. The hospital says its Illinois network includes locations in Lake County, downtown Chicago and the North Shore, with care teams focused exclusively on cancer treatment, according to City of Hope.
For Travis, the appearance was personal as well as public. His official biography says he has continued working on speaking, walking and singing since a near-fatal stroke in 2013, with help from Mary and intensive physical therapy.

Travis became one of traditional country’s defining voices after the 1986 release of Storms of Life, an album that helped push the genre back toward its roots. The Country Music Hall of Fame says his arrival helped reshape country music’s direction, while songs including “Forever and Ever, Amen” and “I Told You So” made him a household name.
ABC7 Chicago reported that Travis and Mary chose to make the trip themselves rather than send a message from afar. For one patient at City of Hope, the result was not just a celebrity meeting, but a rare hospital visit built around the simple power of being remembered.
