Salt Lake City is starting Thursday, August 6, near 70 degrees under clear skies, but the easy morning weather will not last. Temperatures are expected to reach about 100 degrees Thursday before a dangerous stretch of triple-digit heat settles over the valley.
Triple-Digit Heat Arrives Friday
Friday, August 7, is expected to be the hottest day of the stretch, with a high near 103 degrees and an overnight low around 75. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Salt Lake Valley from noon Friday through midnight Sunday night, warning that warm nights will offer little relief.
Saturday should reach about 102 degrees, followed by a high near 101 Sunday. Monday will still be hot at roughly 99 degrees, while overnight temperatures remain in the low to mid-70s through the weekend.
Smoke Lingers Before Storm Chances Increase
Patchy smoke from fires across the Pacific Northwest is expected to hang over the area Thursday, with clearer conditions likely Thursday night. The forecast remains dry through the weekend, but slight chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms arrive Monday and Wednesday as monsoonal moisture moves north.
Cooling Off Will Take Planning
The National Weather Service advises drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air conditioning when possible, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles. Salt Lake County's designated Cool Zones include the SLC Main Library at 400 S 210 E and the Tenth East Senior Center at 237 S 1000 E, according to Salt Lake City officials.
