Salt Lake City woke to clear skies and a temperature around 73°F Monday morning, but the break from summer heat will be brief. The valley is headed for a mostly sunny afternoon near 94°F, with dry air and only a small chance of rain.
Afternoon Heat Arrives Quickly
Temperatures should climb through the 80s by late morning and reach the low 90s during the afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, south winds around 5 mph will turn more northwesterly later in the day, while rain chances remain near zero. No watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for Utah.
Hotter Days Stretch Into Friday
Tuesday and Wednesday will bring more mostly sunny skies with highs near 93°F, followed by a high around 97°F Thursday. Friday looks hottest, with temperatures near 98°F and only a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms after noon. Overnight lows will offer limited relief, staying around 71°F to 73°F through Friday morning.
The combination of heat, low humidity and increasingly dry conditions will make midday outdoor work, exercise and yard projects uncomfortable. Morning and evening will be the easier windows for strenuous activities, especially as the week progresses.
Storm Chances Increase This Weekend
Rain chances become more noticeable Friday night, when there is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, then rise again Saturday and Sunday. Saturday could see a few showers before noon followed by afternoon thunderstorms, with a high near 93°F; Sunday should be somewhat cooler near 89°F but still carries a chance of afternoon storms.
Forecasters expect more moisture to move back into the region late this weekend, bringing higher humidity and better odds for wetting rain. Any storms that develop could still produce sudden gusty winds, so outdoor plans may need a backup option by Saturday afternoon.
