A 19-year-old man showed up wounded at a friend's home near San Antonio's West Avenue on Thursday, telling police that two people had robbed him and shot him in the leg just minutes earlier. Officers still don't know exactly where the robbery and shooting took place, since the young man drove himself away from the scene before seeking help.
San Antonio police were called to the 11700 block of West Avenue on Thursday after the man arrived at what appeared to be a friend's residence with a gunshot wound, according to WOAI. The outlet reports that police said the actual location of the shooting remains unknown, since the victim drove himself to the West Avenue address rather than calling for help where he was attacked.
The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, per the same report. He told officers that two individuals robbed him and shot him during the encounter, though investigators have not said whether any suspects have been identified or arrested.
Address in Greater Harmony Hills Has Seen Gun Violence Before
The 11700 block of West Avenue sits in San Antonio's Greater Harmony Hills neighborhood, a mixed residential and commercial corridor on the North Side near major thoroughfares and public schools, according to property listings on Zillow. It isn't the first time the stretch has drawn police attention. In February 2018, officers investigated a shooting outside a North Side commercial establishment on the same block, recovering shell casings from a vehicle in the parking lot and arresting a 20-year-old on firearm charges, as reported by MySA.
The West Avenue corridor has also been the backdrop for other cases involving young shooting victims. In July 2024, San Antonio community members gathered to mourn two North Side teen shooting victims, including one discovered wounded on Santa Anna Street near West Avenue, Hoodline previously reported.
Part of a Broader Pattern of Robbery-Related Shootings
Thursday's shooting follows a string of similar cases in San Antonio in recent years involving teenagers or young adults caught up in robberies that turned violent. Any suspects eventually identified in Thursday's shooting could face serious charges under Texas law. Robbery committed while displaying or using a deadly weapon, or causing bodily injury, is classified as aggravated robbery under Texas Penal Code § 29.03, a first-degree felony punishable by 5 to 99 years or life in prison and fines up to $10,000, according to FindLaw. Shooting or threatening someone with a firearm can separately be charged as aggravated assault under Penal Code § 22.02, a second-degree felony carrying 2 to 20 years, which can rise to a first-degree felony if the assault causes serious bodily injury.
Robberies Have Fallen Citywide, but 2026 Brought a Reversal
The shooting comes against a backdrop of shifting crime trends in San Antonio. City police department data released in December 2025 showed overall crime fell 13% and violent robbery offenses dropped 16.4% from January through November of that year compared with the same period in 2024, per KSAT. A University of Texas at San Antonio evaluation published in March found that the police department's Violent Crime Reduction Plan contributed to an 18.5% drop in homicides and a 21.1% decline in violent street crime across the city in 2025, according to the San Antonio Report.
That progress appears to have stalled in early 2026. A Major Cities Chiefs Association report released in May found San Antonio recorded an uptick in homicides during the first quarter of the year compared to 2025, even as violent crime dropped nationwide, as reported by Axios. Thursday's robbery-shooting adds to that emerging pattern, with detectives still working to pin down where the confrontation happened and to identify the two people the victim says attacked him.
