A person who went under the water at Meramec State Park Sunday afternoon was recovered about an hour later, prompting an investigation by Missouri authorities. The incident unfolded during a busy summer weekend at the Sullivan-area park, where swimming and river recreation are popular draws.
The call came in before 4:30 p.m. after the person went underwater and did not resurface, according to First Alert 4. The person was recovered at 5:29 p.m., and the Crawford County coroner is investigating alongside the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop I.
Meramec State Park Draws Swimmers And Floaters
The Missouri State Parks website describes the park as a river recreation destination where visitors can swim, fish, raft and boat along the Meramec River. The initial report did not identify the person involved or provide additional details about what led to the emergency.
Sunday's investigation follows a fatal drowning at the same park in April. An official Missouri State Highway Patrol report said a 25-year-old St. Louis man entered the water near a campground boat ramp to swim, began struggling and did not resurface before being pronounced dead at a hospital.
