Springfield is putting its new skatepark to work Saturday with the debut of Garner Street Grind, a free afternoon of tricks, live music and competition at Garner Street Park. The first-time event is aimed at everyone from curious beginners to skaters ready to chase a prize, with the action rolling into the evening.
According to the city’s announcement, Garner Street Grind starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by a free skate clinic at 5:30 p.m. and the main competition at 6 p.m. The clinic is open to skaters of all skill levels, while competitors must pre-register and be at least 8 years old.
Springfield’s Skatepark Gets Its First Major Showcase
The City of Springfield says the event will feature live music, vendors and food and beverages from Stafford’s Sip Co., Prince Cheesesteaks and Lady Dawgs. Prizes will be awarded in beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions, giving the city’s youngest riders a chance to compete alongside more experienced skaters, according to the Parks and Recreation Department.
The competition arrives as the city’s 6,000-square-foot skatepark enters its second summer. Robertson County Source reported that the facility includes street-skating elements, a mini ramp and a signature sculpture created by local artist Adam Heffner and Maker Table.
The park opened in 2024 after a fundraising campaign led by the Kiwanis Club of Springfield raised $166,100 over a decade, with the city contributing another $53,900, the City of Springfield said at the time. The new competition gives that community-backed project something more than a ribbon-cutting moment: a recurring event built around the people it was meant to serve.
Admission is free, but skaters entering the competition must bring a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads. Participants ages 17 and younger also need a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian, and registration details remain available through the official event page.
