Portland starts Tuesday clear and near 60 degrees, but the calm morning is a brief prelude to a hot, smoky stretch. Temperatures are expected to climb to about 96 degrees this afternoon, with wildfire smoke lingering overhead and a Heat Advisory in effect from noon Tuesday through 11 p.m. Wednesday. No rain is forecast.
Wednesday Brings The Peak Heat
Wednesday looks hotter, with a high near 99 and an overnight low around 66. Thursday stays close behind at 98 before onshore flow begins easing temperatures Friday, when Portland should top out near 92. By Saturday and Sunday, highs fall to about 88 and 81.
Smoke And Dry Winds Add Another Layer
The National Weather Service in Portland says smoke will remain a factor through midweek, especially as northerly and northeasterly winds move through the region. Winds in the city should generally run 5 to 10 mph Tuesday, while the broader forecast calls for elevated fire-weather concerns in the Columbia River Gorge and Cascades. The smoke could trim highs by a few degrees in some spots, but not enough to remove the heat risk.
Cooler Weekend Relief
Friday begins the transition, and stronger onshore flow over the weekend should push lingering smoke east of the Cascades while bringing more comfortable afternoons. Portland's extreme-heat guidance points residents toward cooling centers, shelters, libraries, community centers and other public cooling spaces.
Take The Heat Seriously
With morning lows staying in the 60s through Wednesday night, overnight relief will be limited, particularly in urban areas. Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the afternoon sun, use air conditioning or a public cooling space when needed, and check on older neighbors and anyone living alone.
