A man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head turned up at a hospital in Marrero on Saturday morning, delivered not by ambulance but by private vehicle, and it took a call from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office to let New Orleans police know one of their own shooting victims had crossed parish lines. The New Orleans Police Department is now investigating the shooting, which happened in the 3100 block of St. Roch Avenue, within the department's Third District.
According to WDSU, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office alerted NOPD after the man arrived at the hospital with the head wound. He was later transported to a New Orleans-area hospital for further treatment, though his current condition has not been disclosed. The outlet's report, published Saturday morning and credited to reporter Aubry Killion, did not identify a suspect, a motive, or exactly where along the block the shooting took place — details that remain open questions in the investigation.
A Familiar Path to the Westbank
The hospital where the victim first arrived, West Jefferson Medical Center on Medical Center Boulevard in Marrero, is a 419-bed community hospital operated by LCMC Health on Jefferson Parish's Westbank, according to Wikipedia. Driving a gunshot victim there instead of waiting for an ambulance at the scene isn't unheard of in this part of New Orleans. In February 2023, a shooting just a block away in the 3000 block of St. Roch Avenue ended in a fatality after a 911 dispatch error delayed responders, prompting that victim's family to drive him to a hospital themselves, per reporting from Lexipol.
The pattern has shown up elsewhere in the Third District too. Hoodline's own coverage of a Gentilly shootout in early July described wounded victims making their own way to nearby hospitals rather than waiting for first responders. The Third District, which the shooting falls under, covers Gentilly, Lakeview, Gentilly Woods, Filmore, and surrounding neighborhoods, according to the City of New Orleans.
St. Roch Avenue's Violent History
This isn't the first serious case tied to this stretch of St. Roch Avenue. Orleans Parish District Attorney records document an August 2024 homicide in the 3100 block that led to charges of second-degree murder, witness intimidation, and obstruction of justice, according to the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office. Should the shooter in Saturday's case be identified and charged, Louisiana law sets a steep penalty for attempted second-degree murder: a prison sentence of 10 to 50 years at hard labor, without the benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence, per the Bloom Legal Network.
Shooting Comes Amid Sharp Citywide Declines
The incident lands against a backdrop of falling violence in New Orleans. Metropolitan Crime Commission figures through August 2 showed 92 nonfatal shooting incidents citywide so far this year, a 24 percent drop from the same period in 2025. Homicides have fallen even more steeply — 51 victims year-to-date, a 31 percent decline from last year and a 71 percent drop compared to 2022, per the commission's data.
Analysts told Axios in July that New Orleans was on pace for its lowest annual murder total since the 1960s, following three straight years of declining violent crime. NOPD's own Analytics Unit recorded 20 murder or non-negligent homicide incidents in the first quarter of 2026, down from 27 during the same period last year. In January, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams and federal partners announced a public safety strategy targeting gun violence after noting the city's 2025 homicide rate hit a 50-year low.
None of that citywide progress resolves what happened on St. Roch Avenue over the weekend. NOPD has not named a suspect, disclosed a motive, or updated the public on the victim's condition since he was moved to a New Orleans-area hospital for further care.
