Atlanta police responded to a call about a person shot at 2423 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, and the identities of both the victim and any potential suspect remain undisclosed as investigators piece together what happened.
According to WSB-TV, the shooting victim left the scene for the hospital before officers could process a formal transport, a pattern that has become familiar to Atlanta Police Department Zone 4 investigators working late-night calls in Southwest Atlanta. Police are still investigating the circumstances behind the shooting, and no arrests have been announced.
An Address With a Violent History
The location is not new to Atlanta Police Department incident logs. The complex at 2423 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW is known as The Peaks at MLK, also referred to as Crystal at Hamilton, a 183-unit affordable housing community in the Florida Heights neighborhood managed under the Atlanta Housing Authority's waitlist system, according to Affordable Housing Online. The property sits within Atlanta Police Zone 4.
The site has a documented history of violence. Between 2017 and July 2023, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tallied 150 reported crimes at the address — including a December 2022 homicide — and listed it among the region's dangerous dwellings. More recently, a 48-year-old driver was fatally shot inside a vehicle at the same address in June 2025, according to an Atlanta Police Department statement reported by 11Alive, a case that led to the September 2025 arrest of a 16-year-old suspect extradited from Minnesota on murder and aggravated assault charges. The renewed violence comes even as Zone 4, which covers Southwest Atlanta including Florida Heights, was recognized with the Atlanta Police Department's 2025 Crime Reduction Award after overall crime there fell 23% in 2025 — the largest drop of any zone in the city, per the department. Officials attributed the decline to targeted enforcement and community initiatives.
Citywide, the trend has generally pointed downward for the most serious violent crime. Mid-year 2025 statistics released by the Atlanta Police Department showed a 21% decrease in shootings and a 30% drop in homicides compared to the same period the year before, alongside a nearly 50% improvement in E911 response times, according to the Atlanta Police Foundation. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens credited the city's public safety initiatives for the improvement. In December, a 25-year-old shooting victim near Roy Street SW and McDaniel Street similarly arrived at a hospital by private vehicle. And in August 2024, a 34-year-old man shot on Venetian Drive SW was transported to a hospital privately while alert, conscious and breathing — the same condition described for Saturday's victim.
For now, the Atlanta Police Department has released no details on a suspect or a motive, and investigators continue to examine the circumstances behind the shooting at 2423 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW.
