A 28-year-old man was shot in the shoulder Friday night near North and Kolmar Avenues in Chicago's Hermosa neighborhood, prompting a SWAT team to sweep a nearby building after the victim said he believed the gunfire came from an apartment above him. Chicago police officers responded to the scene just before 8 p.m. following a call about a person shot, and the Chicago Fire Department treated the man before rushing him to the hospital.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the man told responding officers he believed the shots had been fired from an apartment above the location where he was struck. That account is what pushed the response beyond a standard patrol call. Chicago police did not report any other injuries connected to the shooting, and no suspect had been taken into custody as of the outlet's report.
Why SWAT Was Called to Clear the Building
Because the shots reportedly came from an upper-floor unit rather than street level, standard patrol officers were not equipped to safely search the building on their own. The Chicago Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics unit is a full-time tactical division trained specifically for barricaded-subject and sniper-type scenarios that exceed what patrol officers typically handle, according to a Courthouse News report on CPD tactical operations. SWAT officers ultimately cleared the scene without incident, per the same account relayed by police.
The Chicago Fire Department transported the victim to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition. Mount Sinai, located in the North Lawndale neighborhood, operates a Level 1 Trauma Center — one of four adult Level 1 trauma centers in Chicago — equipped to handle severe emergency surgical cases from across the West and Northwest sides, according to Sinai Health System.
Area Five Detectives Take Over the Investigation
Area Five detectives are now investigating the shooting. The location near North and Kolmar avenues falls under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Police Department's 25th District, known as Grand Central, while detective work on violent crimes in the neighborhood is handled out of the Area 5 headquarters at 5555 W. Grand Ave., per the City of Chicago. That detective area was reopened in April 2020 by then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot and CPD leadership as part of a broader restructuring meant to speed up detective response times and clearance rates across the 14th, 16th, 17th, and 25th districts, reversing an earlier 2012 consolidation that had reduced the city's detective areas from five down to three.
Whether the 28-year-old man was specifically targeted or struck by gunfire meant for someone else remains an open question that police have not resolved. No suspect description has been released, and it is unclear when or whether an arrest will follow. If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, Illinois law classifies discharging a firearm and causing bodily harm as aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony that carries a mandatory prison sentence of 6 to 30 years upon conviction, since such offenses are non-probationable under state law.

Elsewhere in the same police district, Area 5 detectives have also handled a shooting that wounded a teen passenger in a car on Hirsch Street in mid-August, and a multi-victim shooting injured four people near Leclaire Avenue in the adjacent North Austin area earlier this month.
The broader crime trend in the district has drawn attention from local officials. Chicago Police Department statistics showed armed robberies in the 25th District surged by 130% in July 2023 compared to the year before, a spike that prompted officials to introduce targeted District Coordination Officers focused on neighborhood-level safety, according to reporting from CWB Chicago. Hermosa itself is a densely populated 1.17-square-mile community area with roughly 22,776 residents, more than 80% of whom identified as Hispanic in 2023 Census estimates, according to Wikipedia.
