Atlanta Police Zone 1 officers responded to a person-shot call near Chappell Road NW around 9:26 p.m. and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds before paramedics rushed him to a local hospital.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, the man was located in the 1400 block of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW, but investigators believe he was actually shot one block away, near the 1300 block, before moving to where officers found him. As reported by 11Alive, police cordoned off a stretch of the roadway with crime scene tape while detectives searched for evidence, and the outlet's report notes that officers are still working to determine exactly what happened. No arrests have been announced, and investigators have not released a description of a suspect.
A Corridor With a Violent Recent History
Thursday's shooting is not an isolated event on this stretch of Northwest Atlanta. Just over two weeks earlier, on August 4, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed in a parking lot at 1247 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW after an argument escalated into a late-night shootout involving at least 20 gunshots, according to WSB-TV. That fatal shooting occurred less than a mile east at the Fairway Court Apartments, a corridor already scarred by gunfire this summer.
Earlier in the summer, on July 5, Atlanta Police Aggravated Assault Unit detectives investigated another shooting in the 1900 block of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW, where a 33-year-old man was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds following a verbal altercation, per the Atlanta Police Department. Police later released surveillance footage in that case, asking the public for help identifying the shooter. Together, the three incidents point to a pattern of firearm violence along the boulevard that has persisted through the summer months.
City Targets Blight Along the Same Street
The renewed violence comes as Mayor Andre Dickens' administration pushes to address physical conditions along the corridor. On August 18, the administration requested a special Atlanta City Council meeting to authorize condemnation proceedings against five blighted properties, including one at 699 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW, as part of the city's Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative.
