Three-Car Crash Injures Several In Miami-Dade, Adding To A Grim Toll

Several people were injured Sunday when three vehicles collided in Miami-Dade County, according to authorities. Details on the exact location, the extent of injuries, and what led to the crash remain limited as emergency crews worked the scene.

The crash was reported the afternoon of Sunday, August 23, according to WPLG Local 10, which confirmed that multiple people sustained injuries in the collision. The county launched an updated Vision Zero Action Plan in 2024, aiming to eliminate all traffic deaths and severe injuries by 2040 by targeting investments along a countywide High Injury Network where nearly 300 fatal crashes occur each year, per Miami-Dade County. In April, the county was awarded a $20.4 million federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant to fund 27 traffic safety infrastructure projects and crash audits across high-risk corridors, the county has announced.

Serious multi-vehicle wrecks in the county typically draw a heavy emergency response. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue maintains 72 fire stations and 69 frontline rescue units across a 1,900-square-mile service area, handling more than 300,000 emergency calls annually and providing specialized air-rescue transport for critical crash victims. Severely injured patients are routinely transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the county's sole Level 1 trauma facility serving roughly 2.7 million residents, according to Jackson Health System. It is not known whether any of Sunday's injured were taken there.

What Drivers Are Legally Required to Do

Under Florida Statute § 316.1925, drivers involved in crashes can be cited for careless driving if they fail to operate their vehicle in a careful and prudent manner given roadway conditions, a moving violation carrying four points on a license and fines up to $500. Just five days earlier, Hoodline reported that a trapped driver needed extrication after a severe crash shut down lanes on the Palmetto Expressway in Miami Lakes, and days before that, three people were hurt when a driver fled the scene of a Northwest Miami-Dade crash. In February, a multi-vehicle crash at NW 103rd Street and NW 7th Avenue killed one person and hospitalized five others after a vehicle was redirected onto a sidewalk and into a bus stop, county officials said at the time.
