A tractor-trailer plowed into two garages in Swatara Township, Lebanon County, Wednesday morning after colliding with an SUV that ran a stop sign, sending both drivers to the hospital. The crash happened at the intersection of Route 72 and Thompson Avenue, shutting the state highway down for hours while investigators worked the scene.
Video Captures the Moment of Impact
Surveillance video captured the tractor-trailer and SUV colliding, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The impact sent the rig careening off the road and into the two garages, and several parked vehicles were reportedly hit and damaged in the process. Route 72 was closed in both directions between Mountville and Jonestown roads while police investigated, the outlet reported.
Local firefighters with the Bunker Hill Fire Company were dispatched to assist at the scene, per WGAL, which reported the wreck near Jonestown in the rural, northern stretch of the county. The extent of the injuries suffered by the two drivers has not been made public.
Stop-Sign Violation Could Bring Citations
Pennsylvania State Police said the SUV had failed to stop at a posted stop sign before the collision, per the outlet's report. Under the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code's Section 3323(b), drivers who blow through stop signs face a summary citation and three points against their license upon conviction.
If investigators establish that the SUV driver acted with careless disregard for others' safety, the state's careless driving statute could also apply, carrying additional points and fines up to $250 when a violation results in serious injury. Separately, a driver whose vehicle damages parked cars or garages is required under state law to stop and either locate the property owner or leave written contact and insurance information.
A Crossing With a History of Close Calls
Wednesday's wreck was not the first collision at Route 72 and Thompson Avenue. In February 2021, a driver stopped at the same stop sign attempted to pull onto the roadway and struck a car traveling on Route 72, according to a police blotter published by LebTown.
Residents had flagged the crossing as a problem years earlier, too. In feedback gathered for the Lebanon County Long-Range Transportation Plan, area residents in 2019 cited short sightlines, speeding traffic and driver anxiety when crossing onto Route 72 at Thompson Avenue.
Route 72 Already Under Construction Elsewhere
The crash comes as PennDOT manages nighttime detours and pavement repairs elsewhere along Route 72, tied to a $4.96 million bridge replacement over Swatara Creek connecting Jonestown Road in Union Township to New Bunker Hill Road in Swatara Township, according to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The highway serves as a key north-south link between Lebanon County and Interstate 81.
Crashes involving heavy trucks remain a persistent hazard on Pennsylvania's state routes. Tractor-trailer collisions statewide hit 7,522 in 2022, resulting in 110 fatalities and a five-year high in fatal commercial truck crashes, per an analysis from PhillyLaw. Even so, truck occupants themselves made up just 2.0% of the state's traffic deaths in 2024, according to PennDOT's 2024 Crash Facts and Statistics report, underscoring how much of the damage in truck crashes falls on other vehicles, structures and bystanders rather than the rig's occupants.
Statewide, overall traffic fatalities rose to 1,209 in 2023, even as fatal crashes at stop-controlled intersections and heavy truck-related fatal crashes both declined from the year before, per the Federal Highway Administration.
