The University of Central Missouri has confirmed that a senior who died at an off-campus residence in Warrensburg last Friday was Bailey Throssell, a Sport Management major from Overland Park, Kansas. Warrensburg police are investigating the death, and as of this week, no official cause has been released.
UCM shared the news in a statement posted to its official Facebook page, identifying Throssell and confirming the death occurred off campus in Warrensburg. Because the incident happened at an off-campus address, the university directed all questions about the circumstances and the ongoing investigation to the Warrensburg Police Department, according to Refine News. FOX 4 Kansas City also reported that Warrensburg police are investigating the student's death, though the station's report did not specify a cause.
Neither law enforcement nor university officials have confirmed a cause of death, and the same account notes that determination is still pending. Under Missouri law, Section 58.451 provides that the first licensed medical professional or law-enforcement official who learns of an out-of-facility death must immediately contact the county coroner, while specified circumstances provide grounds for investigation, according to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes. The statute describes coroner investigation, autopsy, certification, and filing findings in the coroner's office. Warrensburg police are investigating the death.
UCM Points Students Toward Counseling Resources
Alongside its statement identifying Throssell, UCM notified the campus community that mental health support and crisis counseling remain available to students and employees through the UCM Counseling Center. The university previously expanded those services by launching a 24-hour Crisis Support Line funded by student fees, per the school's own announcement.
Throssell's death is not the first time Warrensburg police have led an investigation into a UCM student fatality, and it's not the first time the circumstances have generated public uncertainty before official findings emerged. In February 2016, a 21-year-old UCM student from Olathe, Kansas, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Warrensburg Police Department headquarters, according to the student newspaper the Muleskinner. And in November 2019, a UCM student from St. Charles was killed in an accidental firearm discharge at an on-campus apartment, a case that led to second-degree involuntary manslaughter charges against another student following a joint investigation by Warrensburg police, the Johnson County Sheriff's Department and UCM Public Safety, KSDK reported at the time.
A Kansas City-Area Student at a University With Deep Metro Ties
Throssell's hometown is Overland Park. The university's regional ties deepened just weeks before Throssell's death, when Metropolitan Community College and UCM signed a joint strategic agreement in July creating Direct Connect, a concurrent transfer pathway for Kansas City-area community college students moving on to UCM, according to MCCKC.
The university is also navigating broader institutional pressures. In July, S&P Global Ratings assigned an A rating to roughly $75.1 million in UCM educational facilities revenue bonds while lowering the school's long-term rating from A+, citing a doubling of total pro forma debt to $139.9 million and enrollment pressures, per S&P Global Ratings.
