United Airlines is bringing back nonstop flights between Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and San Francisco, ending a six-year gap since the carrier last flew the route directly. Daily Boeing 737-800 service begins October 25, and tickets are already available for purchase.
A Route That Disappeared, Then Came Back With Backing
United last operated nonstop service between Cincinnati and San Francisco in 2020 before suspending it, according to flight schedule data cited by AirlineGeeks. In the years since, low-cost carrier Breeze Airways had been the only airline flying the CVG-to-SFO route directly, running just three flights a week, per data from FlightsFrom.com. United's return means the Cincinnati region goes from a handful of weekly low-cost options to daily legacy-carrier service.
The new route is being supported in part by a minimum revenue guarantee from the JobsOhio Air Service Restoration Program, a public-private incentive created to help commercial airports expand corporate air connections, AirlineGeeks reports. Established in 2020, the program uses those revenue guarantees to help retain and restore commercial air routes across Ohio's airports, according to JobsOhio. The program works with CVG even though the airport physically sits across the river in Hebron, Kentucky.
What Fliers Can Expect On Board And In The Numbers
The daily flights will use Boeing 737-800 aircraft configured with 166 seats, including 16 in First and Business Class and 150 in Economy and Economy Plus, according to JobsOhio. The nonstop covers roughly 2,042 miles between the two airports, with flight times generally running between 5 hours 15 minutes and 5 hours 25 minutes, per Expedia figures. That direct routing should save Tri-State travelers several hours compared with connecting through Midwest or Texas hubs.
San Francisco becomes United's sixth nonstop destination from CVG, joining existing routes to Chicago, Houston, Denver, Washington and Newark, as reported by WLWT. Cincinnati region officials expect the flight to generate an estimated $36.4 million economic impact, per CVG officials cited by WLWT.
Why San Francisco Matters For Business Travelers
San Francisco International Airport serves as United's primary West Coast transpacific hub, giving Cincinnati-area passengers direct one-stop access to major destinations across Asia and the Pacific, according to JobsOhio. Chad Summe, chairman of the Kenton County Airport Board, said the nonstop service will give travelers greater access to a leading center for business, technology and tourism, per WLWT. Summe added that officials are grateful for United's continued partnership and excited about the connection to what he called a strategic hub, and said the service will strengthen CVG's role in connecting the community to key domestic and international destinations.
Part Of A Broader Expansion At CVG
The West Coast addition follows a run of long-haul growth at CVG, including British Airways increasing its London Heathrow schedule to six weekly flights on Boeing 777s and Delta adding daily summer Paris service. CVG welcomed more than 9.2 million passengers in 2024, a 5.3% increase over 2023, and the airport estimates it generates about $10.5 billion in annual economic impact, according to CVG Airport figures. Beyond passenger traffic, CVG also hosts Amazon Air's primary U.S. hub and DHL's global superhub, making it one of the largest air cargo logistics centers in North America.
