A white male suspect is wanted for allegedly snatching an elderly victim's purse in broad daylight on South Claiborne Avenue, and New Orleans police say they still need the public's help tracking him down. The robbery happened around 2:58 p.m. on August 19 in the 8800 block of South Claiborne Avenue, according to the investigator on the case. The purse reportedly contained the victim's bank card and cash.
According to New Orleans Police Department on Facebook, officers are classifying the case as simple robbery and are asking anyone with information about the suspect's identity or whereabouts to come forward. The department stresses that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty, even as detectives continue working to identify the man. A Corridor With a History of Street Crime
The 8800 block sits along a heavily traveled commercial and transit stretch of South Claiborne Avenue near the Leonidas and Carrollton neighborhoods, per NOPD News. The corridor connects Uptown New Orleans to Jefferson Parish and has drawn police attention before; the same block was the site of an armed robbery investigation back in March 2019, NOPD News notes. The area falls under the NOPD's Second District, which is based at 3401 Broadway Street and covers Uptown, Audubon, Carrollton, Leonidas, and Gert Town.
The Second District's command staff saw a leadership change earlier this year. In March, NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick promoted 21-year department veteran Lt. Rob Barrere, who spent 13 years in the Homicide Division, to Assistant Commander of the Second District, according to New Orleans Police Department on Facebook.
Simple Robbery vs. Purse Snatching Under Louisiana Law
Under Louisiana Revised Statutes § 14:65, simple robbery is defined as taking anything of value from another person by force or intimidation without a dangerous weapon, a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $3,000, according to Justia Law. But Louisiana also maintains a separate purse-snatching statute, R.S. 14:65.1, which carries a mandatory sentence of two to 20 years in prison with or without hard labor, according to FindLaw. That distinction leaves open a prosecutorial question once a suspect is identified and arrested: whether the case proceeds as simple robbery or under the tougher purse-snatching statute.
Either charge would be classified as a statutory crime of violence under Louisiana Revised Statutes § 14:2(B), a designation that generally restricts eligibility for suspended sentences or probation, per the Louisiana State Legislature. That classification also imposes strict limits on expungement and sentence reductions down the line.
Citywide Robbery Numbers Are Down, But This Case Remains Open
The Uptown robbery comes even as citywide armed robberies have fallen sharply. NOPD News reports that armed robberies across New Orleans dropped 64% in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2023, with 54 incidents recorded this year versus 152 back then. That broader decline doesn't change the immediate need for a tip in this case, since the suspect remains unidentified.
