Free backpacks, haircuts, braids, and a full afternoon of food and games are heading to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Aurora this Sunday, just three days before East Aurora School District 131 students head back to class. The Aurora Community Back to School Bash runs from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on August 16 at the park, located at 42 N. Farnsworth Avenue, and organizers are inviting all residents to attend.
The event is hosted by Ward 7 Alderman Javier Bañuelos, the youth mentoring nonprofit African American Men of Unity, and the Community Center of Hometown, according to a City of Aurora, IL, Government Facebook post. Alderman At-Large Keith Larson and Willie Ruff are listed as sponsors and partners of the bash, and Bañuelos brings personal ties to the district hosting it: he is a lifelong Aurora resident who attended East Aurora District 131 schools before graduating from Waubonsie Valley High School in District 204. Bañuelos was elected to the Aurora City Council in April 2025.
A Sunday Lineup of Music, Food, and Free Gear
Beyond the giveaways, the bash promises free food, fun and games, bounce houses, and a live DJ, per the event flyer. Musical performances are set from Jonathan Dudley and the Liberated Chorale, and organizers are bringing back what they're calling the Gospel Hour, featuring local groups and choirs. Invited guests include Main Baptist, New Community, Heaven Christ M.B.C., Impact Church, Elias Mem. M.B.C., and Peoples Church, among others.

An Annual Tradition Rooted in Local Need
The Ward 7 Back to School Bash is an established tradition for the neighborhood, previously hosted by Bañuelos at the same park on August 17, 2025, according to the City of Aurora. The park itself offers a splash pad, basketball courts, a sand volleyball pit, a playground, and baseball fields, giving families plenty to do beyond the bash's tents and tables, per Evendo.
African American Men of Unity, one of the event's co-hosts, was founded in Aurora in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to youth mentoring and community support for youth ages 7 to 18, according to the organization's own account of its history. Last August, the group partnered with the Jesse White Foundation to distribute more than 50-item care packages to college-bound Aurora students through an “Off To College Trunk Party,” a separate effort that speaks to the group's broader seasonal push to support students across grade levels. The Community Center of Hometown, located at 1002 Four Seasons Blvd in Ward 3, operates a 2,600-square-foot multi-purpose facility that regularly hosts neighborhood resident groups.
Why the Free Supplies Matter This Year
The timing lines up directly with the district calendar: East Aurora School District 131 has set Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as the first day of classes for K-12 students. More than 60% of students enrolled in the district come from low-income households, according to Illinois State Board of Education data, a figure that underscores why free backpacks, haircuts, and supplies carry real weight for families heading into the new year.
That local need comes against a backdrop of record national spending pressure. K-12 back-to-school spending nationwide is projected to hit a record $43.3 billion in 2026, with households spending an average of $863.86 on supplies, clothing, and electronics, according to the National Retail Federation. For Ward 7 families, Sunday's giveaways offer a direct offset to those costs just before the first bell rings.
Keith Larson, one of the bash's sponsors, was also elected to the Aurora City Council in April 2025 and is the youngest alderperson to serve on the council since 2019. His involvement, alongside Bañuelos and the two nonprofit hosts, reflects a broader pattern of newer city leaders partnering with long-running community organizations to stage the annual event.
