West Jordan Wheels Park is getting a new centerpiece: a 40-foot-wide, 13-foot-tall vert ramp built in Germany, set to become Utah's first public vert ramp when it opens. Crews broke ground on the project this summer, pouring the concrete foundation pad needed to anchor the massive steel-and-wood structure, and city officials are targeting a Spring 2027 completion.
The ramp, known as a Size L G-Ramp, is being manufactured by G-Ramps Inc., a German company specializing in competition-grade action sports ramps, and designed by COR Parks, according to West Jordan City. Photos shared by West Jordan City Hall show the ramp will accommodate skaters, BMX riders, and other action-sports athletes, matching the style of ramps used in major competitions and built for big airs, fast lines, and advanced riding. Vert ramps of this caliber are rare in municipal settings, typically reserved for private training facilities or major event venues, since the same design team previously engineered the Houston Vert Ramp in Texas — recognized as one of the premier public vert facilities in North America.
Wind Barriers Doubling as Spectator Platforms
The vert ramp setup will incorporate repurposed shipping containers surrounding the structure, serving triple duty as a wind barrier, spectator viewing platforms, and an elevated roll-in launch area feeding into the park's adjacent bike trails, per the city's announcement. Wind reduction matters here: riders launching off a 13-foot vert wall are especially vulnerable to gusts mid-air, making the container barriers as much a safety feature as an architectural flourish.
Phase 3 construction officially launched on July 8, when crews began pouring the heavy concrete pad required to support the ramp's superstructure, according to the same city account. That foundation work marks the latest step in a build-out that has steadily transformed the park since it first opened.
From Dump Truck Beds to a German-Built Vert Wall
Wheels Park first opened to the public on October 12, 2024, as a 153,000-square-foot all-wheels facility designed for skateboards, BMX bikes, scooters, roller skates, and wheelchairs alike, the West Jordan Journal reported at the time. The park sits at 8600 South and Ron Wood Park Road, part of the city's sprawling 95-acre Ron Wood Park complex that functions as a regional recreation hub for Salt Lake County.
Phase 2 arrived in September 2025, adding three ramps built onto a repurposed Rio Tinto Kennecott dump truck bed and topped with a 300-square-foot spray-painted American flag mural by local artist Matt Arnold. The park's bike infrastructure also includes over 12,000 square feet of pump track surface built by trail design-build firm Avid Trails, incorporating beginner-to-expert lines, wall rides, and a mirrored race loop for organized events.
Funding a Regional Recreation Push
The park's expansion has been financed through a multi-agency partnership blending West Jordan City municipal funds, corporate contributions from Rio Tinto Kennecott, and grants from the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, per the West Jordan Journal's reporting. That public-private funding model reflects a broader city strategy playing out across Ron Wood Park, where officials are also pushing forward a new municipal water well slated for completion this winter, along with artificial turf fields and expanded parking set for spring 2027.
Taken together, the additions point to West Jordan's ambition to turn Ron Wood Park into a premier action-sports destination in the region. With Utah's first public vert ramp now under construction, the city is betting that skaters and BMX riders will have a reason to make the trip well beyond Salt Lake County.
