Wheeling Hotel Shooting Kills Chicago Man, Marks Second Gunfire at Site in a Year

A 60-year-old Chicago man died Sunday night after being shot at a Wheeling hotel, the second time in less than a year that gunfire has erupted at the same property. Police responded to the MainStay Suites at 8000 Capital Drive around 6:51 p.m. and found two male victims with gunshot wounds, according to Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records.

The victim who died was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m., roughly 80 minutes after officers were dispatched, per records reported by Patch. Both men were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to ABC7 Chicago, which first reported that two people were shot in Wheeling and that one died from his injuries. Advocate Lutheran General operates a Level I Trauma Center that serves as the primary high-level emergency facility for Chicago's north and northwest suburbs, according to Advocate Health Care, and the hospital is one of only five designated adult Level I trauma centers in Cook County and among 15 statewide, per the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Paramedics and firefighters from both the Wheeling Fire Department and the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District responded to the scene, administering emergency medical care alongside police before transporting the two gunshot victims, according to Cardinal News. This is not the first time gunfire has disrupted the MainStay Suites. Less than ten months earlier, on November 6, 2025, the same hotel was the site of a non-fatal shooting that triggered a heavy multi-agency police response, a SWAT deployment, and a standoff before a suspect was taken into custody, as reported by CBS Chicago. The repeat violence at the same commercial lodging site has become a notable pattern for a property that sits just off a busy suburban corridor.

The Wheeling Police Department's Investigations Unit is leading the current probe with assistance from the Major Case Assistance Team, known as MCAT, a multi-jurisdictional task force that pools investigative, forensic, and tactical resources from more than 20 northwest suburban police departments. Wheeling Police Chief Joseph Kopecky took over leadership of the department on February 2, 2026, after nearly three decades on the force and a prior stint as deputy chief, according to the Daily Herald. The village's police department is made up of 63 sworn officers across Patrol, Investigations, Administrative Services, and Social Services divisions, and it relies on the regional Northwest Central Dispatch System for 911 calls, according to municipal records from the Village of Wheeling.

Second Death Investigation for Wheeling This Summer

Sunday's shooting is not the only death Wheeling police have investigated in recent months. Seven weeks earlier, on July 4, police investigated a death in the 1100 block of Wildberry Court involving a 55-year-old man who sustained assault-related injuries, though a detained suspect was ultimately released without criminal charges, according to official municipal releases.
