A 16-year-old boy was shot twice on the 4700 block of North Albany Avenue in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood on Tuesday evening, struck in the left foot and abdomen before making his own way to a nearby hospital for treatment. Chicago Police say no suspect is currently in custody, and the boy was later listed in good condition after being transferred for specialized care.
Teen Self-Transported Before Transfer to Trauma Center
According to Chicago Police, the teenager was located on the 4700 block of North Albany Avenue after being shot twice, per the Chicago Sun-Times. He transported himself to Swedish Hospital before being taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, the outlet reports. The report identifies Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center as operating a Level I trauma center, according to the American Hospital Directory.
The teen was listed in good condition, the report notes. Chicago Police have an investigation underway, but as of the latest reporting, no suspect had been taken into custody.
Case Falls to Area 5 Detectives in 17th District Territory
The shooting occurred in Albany Park, and Chicago Police are investigating.
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, Illinois law classifies knowingly discharging a firearm and injuring another person as Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, a Class X felony, as outlined by Combs Waterkotte.
A Pattern of Violence on Nearby Blocks
This shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have rattled Albany Park in recent months. On July 20, a standoff in the 4600 block of North Springfield Avenue, just blocks from the Albany Avenue shooting, ended with a Chicago Police SWAT officer and a 67-year-old woman shot, resulting in 11 felony charges including attempted murder against a 42-year-old resident, according to WTTW News. The standoff involved a SWAT officer and a woman who were shot.
Weeks later, on August 9, Chicago Police opened a homicide investigation after a woman was found dead from stab wounds inside a home on the 4800 block of North Avers Avenue, as reported by WFLD FOX 32 Chicago. No suspect was immediately detained in that case. And earlier in the year, on March 1, an unsolved shooting inside a basement apartment in the 4900 block of North Harding Avenue left a 24-year-old man dead and a 29-year-old man wounded in the left foot, a case Hoodline detailed in its earlier report on the neighborhood's basement shooting.
Local Concerns Continue
The neighborhood's history of gun violence involving young people stretches back further. In a shooting near Volta Elementary School in Albany Park, a 15-year-old boy was shot and wounded before being taken to Lurie Children's Hospital, according to ABC7 Chicago. That victim was listed in good condition following treatment, echoing this week's outcome for the 16-year-old.
These incidents remain under investigation. Whether the teenager was targeted or caught in crossfire, and whether investigators have recovered shell casings, surveillance footage, or triggered gunshot-detection alerts on the block, remains unclear as the investigation continues.
