A 31-year-old woman is dead and a man is recovering after gunfire tore through a residential driveway in unincorporated Lockport Township Wednesday night, striking two people who investigators say were not even the intended targets. Will County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 200 block of Dellwood Avenue just before 8 p.m. and found both victims wounded outside a home.
Deputies were dispatched at 7:54 p.m. Wednesday to the Dellwood Avenue residence following reports of a shooting, according to Shaw Local. First responders arrived to find the woman and an adult man in the driveway suffering from gunshot wounds; both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead and the man was stabilized, per CBS Chicago. As FOX 32 Chicago also reported, the shooting happened Wednesday night in the southwest suburbs.
Bystanders Caught in a Dispute That Wasn't Theirs
A preliminary investigation indicates the two victims were simply standing outside when they got caught in crossfire from a dispute that did not involve them, the station's report notes. Investigators have not disclosed who was firing, how many shots were exchanged, or whether the gunfire came from a foot confrontation or a passing vehicle, leaving much of the underlying conflict unresolved for now.
The woman's identity has not been made public. Her release is pending further investigation and next-of-kin notification, according to the same account from the Will County Coroner's Office.
A Pattern of Violence in Unincorporated Lockport Township
Because the victims appear to have been bystanders rather than intended targets, prosecutors could eventually turn to Illinois's transferred intent doctrine if a suspect is identified. Under state law codified at 720 ILCS 5/9-1, a person who intends to shoot one target but instead kills an unintended bystander can still be charged with first-degree murder, according to legal reference documented by Justia Law. Lockport Township is home to an estimated 60,895 residents, according to World Population Review, and its unincorporated pockets depend on the sheriff's office rather than municipal police for coverage. That patchwork of jurisdiction has repeatedly put deputies at the center of the township's most serious violent crimes, from the 2022 Fairmount Avenue shooting to Wednesday's crossfire on Dellwood Avenue.
No arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting, and investigators have not said whether they believe the gunfire came from a car or an altercation on foot.
