A vehicle struck a fire hydrant on King Street in San Francisco Wednesday afternoon, sending water high into the air and disrupting traffic as a San Francisco Giants game was letting out nearby.
The collision happened near Oracle Park, KRON4 reported. San Francisco Fire Department personnel responded, and a citizen-app video captured water shooting above the street. KRON4 said its crew was on the way to the scene as the incident unfolded.
KRON4 reported that video showed traffic backed up for several blocks around the flooded intersection. Some drivers continued through the standing water.
Traffic Disruptions Near Oracle Park
A Giants game was letting out a few blocks away. Oracle Park is at the corner of 3rd and King streets in the South of Market area, according to SFMTA.
Buses were backed up on a one-way street near the flooded area, and traffic delays continued as the game let out.
Game-Day Traffic and Hydrant Context
SFMTA says its routine game-day plan closes eastbound King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets from the seventh inning until postgame traffic subsides. That planned closure is separate from the disruption caused by the hydrant collision. In a separate incident, the San Francisco Examiner reported that a car struck a hydrant on California Street on Tuesday, Jan. 21, sending water into the air before firefighters shut off the flow.
Cause and Injuries Still Unclear
KRON4 reported that the cause of the collision was not clear. Paramedics assessed the people involved, but there was no immediate information about whether anyone was hurt.
