A juvenile was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after jumping from the rear seat of a moving vehicle on eastbound State Route 126 near Winton Road in Springfield Township, Ohio. Medics and officers arrived to find the child unresponsive on the side of the highway, and the juvenile’s current condition remains unknown.
Springfield Township police and fire crews were dispatched to the area at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday, according to WKRC. Medics transported the child to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, which operates the region’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center at its Burnet Campus, where fellowship-trained pediatric emergency physicians treat the most severe injuries, according to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Separately, WCPO 9 confirmed the hospital transport and reported that Springfield Township Police are appealing to witnesses for information at 513-729-1300. The department’s traffic safety and criminal investigations units are jointly handling the case, per the same account from WKRC.
A High-Speed Corridor Through Northern Hamilton County
State Route 126, known locally as Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway, stretches 16.4 miles across northern Hamilton County with posted speed limits between 50 and 60 mph on most stretches, according to Wikipedia. The road functions as a primary east-west link between I-75 and I-71, and Winton Road, where the incident occurred, is a major suburban arterial carrying more than 30,000 vehicles a day through Springfield Township and Greenhills, per the Village of Greenhills.
The stretch has already seen serious trouble this year. Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway experienced multiple severe traffic emergencies in 2026, including a July incident in which a Colerain Township police cruiser was struck from behind and a March crash near Winton Road, according to FOX19. Those incidents underscore the volume and speed of traffic moving through the corridor where Thursday’s child was found on the shoulder.
What Ohio Law Says About Child Passengers
Ohio law requires all motor vehicle passengers under age 16 to use appropriate restraints or seat belts, with booster seats mandated for children under 8 who stand shorter than 4 feet 9 inches, under Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.81, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Those units are now working the case together, but key details remain unresolved, including the juvenile’s age, medical status, and what led the child to jump from the vehicle.
The circumstances echo a similar case from August 2024, when a juvenile in Columbus, Ohio suffered critical injuries after falling or leaping from a moving car, prompting a local police investigation into passenger safety, as Hoodline reported at the time.
