The Larimer County Detention Center sits at 2405 Midpoint Drive and was originally built to hold 450 inmates but now operates with capacity for up to 617 detainees, according to the Colorado Legal Defense Group.
Colorado's Motor Vehicle Theft Law
Under Colorado Senate Bill 23-097, which took effect in July 2023, motor vehicle theft under C.R.S. § 18-4-409 is prosecuted as a felony regardless of how much the stolen vehicle is worth, according to the Colorado General Assembly. The same legislative package also created a misdemeanor offense for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
That legal distinction matters amid a broader decline in Colorado motor vehicle thefts, according to the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority. The state's offense rate fell from 790 per 100,000 residents in 2022 to 487 per 100,000 in 2024, a decline of nearly 40 percent over two years.

Crisis Response Tools Built Into Local Policing
The department operates a Mental Health Response Team in partnership with UCHealth, pairing sworn patrol officers with licensed behavioral health clinicians on crisis calls.
Fort Collins also became the first agency in Colorado to adopt the Vitals app in April 2022, a tool that lets first responders receive voluntary medical and behavioral health profiles when approaching someone in crisis, using Bluetooth beacons to relay de-escalation cues to officers within 80 feet, per UCHealth Today. Officers were involved in a separate incident earlier this month in which gunfire near the EPIC pool injured two people.
